Good day - that's how the conversation in the small washroom began. We have not seen many Brits during our travels so it was strange hearing English spoken so naturally. The accent though was from someone from a land down under. I turned round to see a man and his wife carrying a huge bag of washing. My Australian friends told me that they had flown in to Holland three weeks ago, picked up their hired van and had meandered thi had called into Amsterdam and Koblenz , followed the river , entered Austria and had spent yesterday in Saltzburg. They needed a washing machine as the hire van only had one set of bedding. This needed to last another three weeks. I had washed my clothes, taken them out of the washer and struggling to ... read more

Thought it was going to be a hot day today and it certainly was. By 10am it was already roasting and getting stickier by the minute. We got to Graz reasonably early to try avoid the excessive heat and through the day we were delighted when a few cooling raindrops fell on us but with the fantastic luck we are having it didn't actually rain while we were in the city. Fortunate as that long scooter ride back on busy roads would not have been fun in the wet. Bob had found somewhere for us to head to on the edge of the old part of the city so we went straight there and parked. We had a little 'walking' guide book and did our best to follow the route it said but to be honest ... read more

Woke to yet another lovely day. We are being very lucky especially given the frequent / daily thunderstorms which the weather forecast keeps showing. In fact not a drop of rain at all today and by mid afternoon really rather unbearably hot at 28 degrees+. Not a long drive at all and we took the scenic route for well over half way, a road which followed the motorway and often the railway and as a result went through several quite industrial towns. Bob had decided we need to use the motorway for the approach to Graz as the alternaitve road was an up and down, windy route. The motorway went through a couple of tunnels, really long ones 8 km and then a 10km. We had already prepaid a toll which allows us by number plate ... read more

Danach habe ich wieder TV gekuckt.... read more

Nachtrag: Ich bin selber etwas verwirrt ... read more

Every season has its own beauty but travelling before Christmas always means unforgettable experiences for me. During the season the cities and towns tend to show their different faces, the decorated houses and streets bring warmness and happiness into our hearts, not to mention the fact that everyone becomes friendlier and take care of the others. Visiting christmas markets is the part of preparation, when everyone gets together, drink mulled wine and listen to christmas carols. In the wonderful city where I live, Budapest has many charmful Christmas fairs all over the city where you can enjoy the Christmas spirit. Now I would rather tell you about our visit in Graz, a wonderful city in Austria. Why Graz? Few weeks before Christmas with my husband we started planning our trip. The most important aspect was to ... read more

So I made it! After all these months of planning and talking about it, and despite the many ifs, but's and maybe's that I was faced with in the last couple of months before I left, I finally landed in Vienna airport at 3.10pm on Friday 19th September 2014, and my Year abroad adventure had begun! Having had the luxury of Dad coming to Gatwick airport with me that morning and directing me around the London underground and train system, my first challenge was navigating my own way from Vienna airport into the city (about 30 mins away). However thanks to some very useful instructions from a past assistant and the ease and reliability of the public transport in Austria, this was surprisingly easy and I met Claudia, my american friend who is also working as ... read more

Of course the day we leave Vienna is the day we wake up to clear blue skies. Today was beautiful and I am, of course, burnt again. We discovered yesterday that Schloss Belvedere was 4 minutes away from our hostel, so we wandered there this morning. What with the blue skies, gorgeous buildings, fountains, the Sun and gardens, it was a relaxing and pretty morning of tourism. We had to pay to go in so we didn't bother but just the outside was great too. Then back to get our rucksacks which I swear weighs more every time I put it on. We had to change at Wien Meidling and Bruck an der Mur and the stretch between the latter and Graz Hauptbahnhof had some of the most idyllic, picturesque and beautiful views I have ever ... read more
