SUNDAY!!!

Today we drove about 30 - 40 minutes to the beautiful city of Bamberg and spent a fabulous day there!

Beth has joked that I know more people in Germany than she does! 😊 When I arrived 2 1/2 weeks ago I said, "OK, if it's possible we've got to visit these people, and these people, and these people..." hee hee hee. Although we haven't been able to connect with everyone (sometimes even 3 weeks isn't long enough), we were able to meet up with Klaus, the brother of a former pen-pal of mine! I first met Klaus and his family in person ten years ago when they were living in Germany for several years. Our family's have kept in touch through the years and we often end up connecting in "who-would-have-thunk-it" circumstances!

Klaus was wonderful enough to agree to give Beth and I a bit of a tour through Bamberg. He's been living there for a few years now, doing research and teaching, so we jumped at the opportunity for a more informative afternoon than simply us wandering around the town saying, "Huh, these are cool looking buildings."

Actually, the city of Bamberg is pretty special since it wasn't destroyed when Germany was bombed. So the buildings are originals ... from hundreds and hundreds of years ago! We saw the incredible Bamberg Cathedral, complete with crypt. We also took a tour of the emperor's palace. Fabulous! One room's ceiling is painted in 3rd to give the illusion that it's a two story room. Incredible.

We also saw the old monastery, little Venice along the canal, and the original town hall, which has a great story! No one wanted to loose the land to build the town on, and there were arguments over which side of the canal it would be on. So to compromise the built it on a bridge in the middle of the canal! Fantastic! 😊

We also got coffee and hot chocolate by the monastery, getting a picturesque view of the city. Then we had lunch at a great old-German-feel restaurant. The old buildings are fabulous! Ordering was fun, and I was so proud of myself for making a decision ... and it was a perfect decision at that! I had an amazing salad with bacon pieces and fried potatoes with parsley. OH SO GOOD!!

Later we headed back to Klaus' apartment for some tea and chocolate and conversation. I think we hit most of the major topics: linguistics, cultures, education, politics, religion ... and who knows what all else! Beth and I enjoyed ourselves thoroughly! Thanks Klaus!
