Vasara writing…when we drove to Arba Minch, we took a boat to Lake Chomo. It wasn’t so simple to just go to the lake. We first had to get our tickets from the National Park office. Mom and Dad weren’t happy because we had to pay tourist prices which is a lot of money. We drove 30 minutes through mud and swamp to get to the lake. A taxi coming back got stuck in the deep mud. 15 Ethiopian men pushed out the taxi. By this time it was getting late. We got into the boat and saw egret birds and pelicans right away. A colorful rainbow was in the sky, and a pretty sunset was beginning. We rode in the boat for 15 minutes and then saw eyes above the water looking at us. It was a hippopatomus!

After mosquitos, hippos kill the most people in Africa. They trample people who get in their way. We were not that close to them, but we could see them pretty well. We saw about 20 hippos in all. I saw one hippo open its large mouth. He yawned.

Then we saw huge crocodiles. They are hard to see because they look like logs. One crocodile kept his mouth open a long time. We saw him from the side. The crocodiles are very long and splash when they go into the water. They pick up their bellys when they walk.

Later we went to a crocodile farm where we saw a long crocodile that was 15 years old. We saw him open his mouth. There was a skeleton of a crocodile that was 64 years old. They kill crocodiles when they are 5 years old and sell their skins to Saudi Arabia.

Hippos, Crocodiles, and Pelicans, OH MY!!!
I'm so happy all of you were able to break out and explore what I think looks more like the "Africa" we all imagine instead of dusty, crowded cities. :) I couldn't help but thing about the Lake Como I went to in Italy 5 years ago--- it's quite different from the one you went to. While you saw hippos and crocodiles, I saw hotels and George Clooney! I guess the only thing they had in common was water and a beautiful sunset. hehe Vasara, was it scary seeing the crocodiles??? Even though I know hippos are the most dangerous animal, it's hard to be scared of something so fat, round, and clumsy-looking! :) Even though I wasn't there, I think I'm going to dream about Africa tonight. Thanks for writing all your amazing stories and posting pictures, I know it's a really long and tough process. MYLIU MYLIU MYLIU! Vija
