Totally worth the trek... Wilsons Prom with Ben and Mel :D
I met up with Ben and Mel (Ben used to work at Durrants). Ben had this crazy idea about going camping. He wanted to show me Wilsons Prom and promised me that it would be an amazing experience. I packed my bag for two nights. Unfortunately Kirsty was not evry well so I left her behind and trotted off to the country. Ichatted to Ben and Mel in the car - which was a three hour jounery at the least. It was very surreal to see them both again - especially in such unfamiliar terriory.
We stopped off in a place called Foster to have some food and to meet up with all the other people who were camping with us. There was only one pub in Foster - so naturally that was the one we chose. All of ther group seemed chatty and nice enough, a lot of them did not know each other as they were all friends of friends which made it a lot easier to talk to everyone as I did not feel like an outsider. Half way through eating a man came round selling raffle
tickets. He asked me to help him pull out the winning ticket for his "chuck raffle". Unbeknown to me a "chuck raffle" was actually a chicken raffle - where by the prizes were actual chickens!!!
Upon pulling out the winning tickets I managed to pull out three tickets belonging to people in our group. We won - a chicken, a box of veggies and a tray full of meat. Had we not been on our way to a camp site then these would have been the worst prizes in the world! Instead we were rich!
The other astonising thing was that when we got to tha campsite there were a million and one cats wandering around. Massive they were... I watched Ben and Mel pitch up my tent and watched the cats wandering around. Ben then shone his torch on one of the cats and I jumped about six feet up in the car. The were possoms!!! All of them - just wandering around minding their own business.. couldn't believe my eyes.
Once I had got over the shock we sat down to a few drinks and toasted the trip.
The next morning I woke up
with a start. I was under attack. Animals and birds everywhere. I was surrounded. I swear to god there was a possom nibbling away at the tent pegs. Seagulls , cockatoos, parrots - you name it. I felt a bit like Ace Ventura and had I not been in desperate need of the loo I think I would have stayed hidden in my tent forever.
After breakfast - meat of course. We set out to tackle Mount Oberon. Fortunaley ben drove us up half way, but the trek up the mountain was horrendous. It was hotter than hot and I had failed to bring any water with me and I had stupidly decided to wear flipflops for the walk. We walked up one side of the mountain and i have to say the view was poor and uninspiring. I could feel my face getting hotter and hotter and me heart was pumping out of my chest. I am not sure how I am going to cope in Thailand when I trek for three days...
The view was spectacular. I could see why ben was so keen for me to come along and see this. It was just breath
taking. (Or maybe that was me trying to recover from the hike!) Perfect blue sky, perfect blue sea. Mountains that hugged a large forest on the edge of a beach with white white sand. I traced the river that leads down to the sea and tried to work out where the source was. I can not describe how perfect this view was. (When I get a good internet connection I will upload a picture).
We head down to the beach and chilled out - what a perfect perfect day.
That evening we ate like kings - and gave a load of our prize meat to fellow campers as we just could not finish it all. One of Ben's friends gave me an Ozzie "Stubby Holder" which is a little beer holder or jacket. 😊
One the second day we woke up (thanks to the wildlife) and walked along to "Squeeky Beach" a beach that had been affectionately named after the noise that you feet make when walking through the sand. Which was great fun. I spent a lot of time marching up and down the beach making as much noise as I could. What a child.
We
Me on the top!
With a very red face drove back to Melbourne and met up with Kirsty who was feeling much better. In a humble attempt to say thank you to Ben and Mel I treated them to dinner in a bar/restaruant called the White Rabbit in Kensington. The trip to Wilsons Prom was probably one of the biggest highlights on my trip so far. I was so grateful to Ben and Mel and so glad that I had been reunited with them. (so thank you Ben and Mel!).
I spent a couple mopre days in Melbourne and met up with Sido for lunch and then head off to Perth to be reunited with Karen and my twin counsins who I have not seen for over ten years... I was so so excited!
