My Travel to Remscheid

This is the main government center and the most attractive building in Remscheid.
Sorry that it has been so long since I have updated my blog but life has been very busy settling into the new town. I left Radolfzell to start a semester at Bergische Universität in Wuppertal, Germany. I will be studying Wirtshaftwissenschaft (Business and Economics) and Geschichte (History). While going to school I am living in another town not far away called Remscheid. This was the town that I first arrived in when leaving Radolfzell. My host family was eagerly awaiting me at the Hauptbahnhof.
My first week in Remscheid was filled with spending time with my new host family and getting to know the 4 kids and dog. The oldest is an 11 year old boy named Timon, a 9 year old girl named Selina and twins, age 7, named Mara and Ella. They are full of energy and it is a huge change from living with a 72 year old woman. The parents, Heike und Christian, are really nice and they were super helpful while I was getting settled into the new city. The first week I went to Holland with the family, drank corn liquor with the rich grandfather, had an interesting night at family friends for dinner

and went to a German church and youth group. The kids are correct my German constantly and think it is absolutely hilarious that I can’t say the German word for Marble. The mother speaks English pretty well but speaks to me in German as much as possible. I can tell that my German is getting much better with all the family dinners and explaining how my day was.
The family has their own house and they are letting me stay in the small house next door that they recently purchased. So I have my own kitchen, living room and bathroom. The set up is pretty great and it is nice to have so much more space than my last host. I also finally have wireless internet again. This was a very nice thing to have back since not having any internet at my last host family. The house is on a little hill and surrounded by wooded areas. The family loves going on walks through the forest and often invites me with. I am glad to be in a town that I can still see the leaves change but I still think the leaves are prettier in Minnesota.
The city

is very different than the quaint towns in southern Germany. The state of North Rheine Westfallen is very industrial and many of the cities aren’t as pretty. Remscheid is much larger in population than Radolfzell with 100,000 more people. The prettiest thing in the town is the Rathaus or government center. Remscheid is fairly centrally located for easy public transportation. I can get to both Dusseldorf and Cologne in an hour and both are huge cities in Germany. Leaving Radolfzell was very hard and getting settled in a new town by myself was scary but after a few weeks of taking the wrong bus or walking aimlessly around the town I can feel myself settling. In my next blog I will tell you all about my university and the craziness of registering for classes.
