This morning (Wednesday, October 22nd), we went to the Cairns Tropical Zoo. It's small compared to places like the Bronx Zoo, but I don't think the Bronx Zoo has a kangaroo feeding area. The zoo has a bunch of cool birds, macaws and kookaburras and emus and cassowaries. And they have these adorable tamarins, and some nepalese red pandas. Plus, they have dingos (Hi, Paula!), a wombat and a bunch of koalas. Even cute little baby ones! You can have your picture taken holding one, but sorry, not really my style, folks. After that, we went to a crocodile farm. They have an artifical wet lands set up where they have wild crocs and you ride in a boat and watch them get food. They are intimidating up close, let me tell you. After that, they showed us the "farm" area, where the crocs that they farm for skin are housed. I know that farming them like that keeps the wild population from being hunted, but I don't really like the idea of taking eggs from a mother croc to raise them for three years (and only 3 because that way the scales don't get to big) in order to make handbags and shoes. Spent a couple of hours there, then drove back to the hotel (about a 45 minute drive).
Back at the hotel, we signed up for some of the optional excursions, then Haviva and I walked from our hotel into town. Walked along the Esplande and saw some pelicans. Kind of weird to see them so close in the city, especially since the bay area has mountains in the distance that remind me of Capetown, South Africa. H is off on her own checking out the grocery store while I do this, then tonight we have an aboriginal dinner.
And since I'm running out of time on our computer, I'll end this here. Possibly more tomorrow after a trip to Green Island, but not for certain.
