We spent most of the day again driving down the interstate. Quick and efficient but not real scenic. So only a quick spiel and a few photos. Called in at the Devils Monument, a huge hunk of rock rising about 600 feet above the ground, the Indians reckons that the marks were put it the side of it by a big bear. I’m a bit sceptical about theat. Saw a bucket load of Prairie Dogs again. They almost look like a ferret, I don’t where the dog name comes from. There were hundreds of them digging holes everywhere. Crossed the border from Wyoming into South Dakota. I always thought Sth Dakota was just corn fields, but it is actually pretty nice and scenic.
Drove through the Spearfish Canyon, still passing ski fields and snow mobiles for hire and still not enough snow to make good use of them, and into Deadwood. Home of Wild Bill and Calamity Jane. Its claim to fame was a gold rush town with casinos and gambling. Today it’s a town of casinos and gambling, the gold rush now being tourist dollars.
Got to Mt Rushmore late, they have the mountain illuminated at night. More from there tomorrow.
