Casa Alma
This is the house that I stayed in during the weekend. It was really big and had a neat poarch with hammocks! Hola! Hope everyone had a happy Columbus day off of school in the states and maybe a day off of work too! Here they don’t really celebrate that day as a holiday from work, but my brother, Juan Diego, did dress in a Native American Indian costume and all of the kids dressed in different costumes of other cultures to learn about them. I hope everyone had a great weekend as well I did some really interesting things this weekend and learned some things too... I learned about technology, different socities & cultures and the environment...
So, let me recap my week... Thursday - Espanol Exam & Class from 8-12noon. Then I went to find out the prognosis of my camera - it broke 2 weeks ago! And like I thought it was going to be, it wasn’t good. It would cost me $160 to fix it! Therefore it would definitely not be worth it to fix it. Especially because they would have to order new parts and Samsung cameras are not a popular brand here so I decided not to get it fixed. The good news however is that my Mom and Dad love me and are
Global Creek
This is a picture, of the place we stayed. It was most definitely in the rainforest! bringing me a new one when they come visit in 14 days!!!! Thanks so much & I owe them huge!! I guess they know that I love to take pictures and it is so essential to have one here. I have taken over 250 pictures already.
Friday - I had school then at 12:30pm, all 18 students whom I came here to CR with and my professor from NCC left in our private and air-conditioned bus to go for our Global Nature Weekend Retreat, in a town called Hone Creek, near Puerto Viejo in Limon (one of the 7 providences of CR). Global Creek is the name of the place that I stayed at. It is a learning center for people to come and learn how to protect the environment. Overall it was very interesting. It was supposed to tie into my class that I am taking here called Technology, Society and Environment. The place was very new, only about 1 year old, and there are not many places like it here in CR. Also the guy who was in charge was from Canada so he spoke all English. We stayed in houses on the property and
This is a cocoa...
They make chocolate from this! And they grow on trees! all ate together in the kitchen. I learned this weekend that being Vegetarian or Vegan is much better for the environment so the all the meals were vegetarian or vegan. If you want to know anything about the environment, recycling, saving energy or how to lower your bills, you can ask me because I have learned it all!!
Saturday - On Saturday morning they had a yoga class that I participated in. It was my first time ever doing yoga and I really enjoyed it! I have done pilates before and it was similar just a slower version of it I thought. We went on a nature hike in the morning and then we rode bikes, yes all 18 of us! - to a Arco-Ego Farm. Basically it is a government sponsored farm that has all organic food. Then we had a session where we learned more about the environment. That night, we all got dressed up and took taxis to nearby Puerto Viejo to go out dancing and spend some time there because it’s a such a neat town. (I went there 2 weeks ago too!) Its actually only like 15 minutes from the border of
Panama! Even our professor went out dancing with us too and we all had a great time!
Sunday - We all had breakfast and left by 11am and went to nearby Cahuita. They have a national park with a beach that was absolutely beautiful... white sand, warm turquoise water and gorgeous sun! Let’s just say I didn’t want to leave! The beach was post card perfect! I took some great photos, but they just didn’t do justice for how awesome the place was! Then we left at around 2:30pm for our long trip home. It ended up pouring raining almost the entire way home, so that prolonged our trip to about 6 hours. Thankfully, I’m really good at sleeping, so the bus ride wasn’t so bad!
Monday - Happy Columbus Day! Although I didn’t get the day off of school! I had the typically day of school in the morning and my professor from NCC cancelled my afternoon class because we were all really tired from the weekend. It was awesome! We are also in the middle of winter so it rains all the time and right now especially because there is a storm
This is the pond..
The pond was in front of Casa Alma, where I stayed at. It also has these animals called cayman in it. They are a smaller version of aligators & crocodiles! in Mexico. It literally rained all day on Monday....
Tuesday - more rain all day!! I feel like I am never dry, my clothes, shoes, everything, always feel at least a bit damp! My umbrella is seriously my best friend these days! Anyways, coffee is a great way to warm up and its so good here! The employees are starting to know me as a regular at my favorite Coffee & Pastry & Bakery Shop! And I also had a taste of the US today when I found an American outlet store, similar to TJ Maxx or Marshalls, and of course I bought some $5 shoes!! What a deal! I just couldn’t resist; plus you can never go wrong with cute black heels!
Today - Spanish class & NCC class in the afternoon. And yes it is still raining! There is a tropical storm literally right on top of Costa Rica and in Mexico too. It has been raining for 3 days straight, but the good news is that it is only supposed to continue for another 24 hours..Im not so convinced, but we will see! I also received my absentee ballot in the
The river..
This river was at the organic food farm and it was really pretty. mail. Im really excited that I get to vote!
Tomorrow - I have my interview for my Volunteer placement at Santa Teresa School. It’s a private school for kids ages 3-17 that I will be volunteering at starting November 17th until December 12th, the day before I leave. I won’t have Spanish class or my other class anymore because I will be working at the school for at least 5 hours per day. I am really excited and looking forward to be working at the school!
Take care everyone & thanks for reading!
