Montevideo, Closed on Sundays

After a nice lie in Sol and myself walked the length and breadth of the city, under orders of the girls, to find a nice place for breakfast. Despite spending some time we find very little. Apparently Montevideo shuts on a Sunday.

As we head back some Italian guy talks to us and tries to convince us that all the action is happening at the beach. In reality he is trying to sell us tickets to the football and or anything else he's got his grubby hands on but hey, all advice is useful advice.

By the time we get back the girls are almost ready and it is almost lunch so we wander back out to town and into the old city centre.

Here lies the tomb of Artigas, a hero in these parts, and you can go right in to the tomb which is topped with a huge statue of said man. The tomb is eerie with two guards watching over complete with full uniform and guns.

Having exited we have a look around the massive buildings that surround the square before heading over to the coast. We walk along this for an hour (followed by the Italian man who has caught up with us and is intent on selling tickets to the football) or so taking in the fresh sea air and thinking how weird that there is nothing directly South of this bar the Antarctic.

There is little choice in lunch venues but we find a up-scale restaurant (Rumi) where we get excellent food and awful service. The seafood paella is massive and even between three we can't finish it.

At this point Sol departs and I switch into girl mode as we find a market that is unfortunately shutting up. Still time to browse we then return through a few parks and local closed sites back to the hotel.

Shattered after our long walk we have a siesta and then felt in the mood for cocktails. The bars are starting to open now and we pop into a local Irish bar where I treat myself to margaritas.

For dinner we find the recommended Los Lenos where the staff are described as bow tied and stern stares. Well, the bow ties have gone but the stern stares haven't, when the food is this good and plentiful though you really needn't worry and finally, being the last in the restaurant, we leave and get back to the hotel for sleep.
