Hi All, I'm feeling rested after having our 'holiday within a holiday'. We decided that we should take a few days off from our travels and take it easy on the gorgeous island of Koh Samui, Thailand.
For Maeve this was to be the highlight of the trip so far, to visit an exotic island with blue skies, white sand and turquoise water. We stayed for 6 days and had everything Maeve was looking for except the sunshine. It, being monsoon season, doesn't seem to get too sunny in this part of the world too often, about 5 or 6 days a month. Maeve was none too pleased as every morning was dull and overcast and the sea was not the colour she had longed for. By the 3rd day we had done most of the things to do when it's not sunny - frequenting the local establishments, hired a jeep for a day to explore the island, window shopping, sleeping.
By day 4 Maeve was getting depressed and I was seriously bored, not a good combination. My suggestion that maybe we should just pack up and move on nearly broke poor Maeve's heart. She had been dreaming of lying out
I think she likes me!!!
Maeves sandy and salty declaration on golden sands with clear turquoise water lapping up on to her toes ever since we left home. The thought of leaving before a nice day was too much to take but at the same time there was no point waiting 10 days for nothing. Maeve would now be content with just 1 day of sun.
The next morning we woke up and the sky was blue, the water was turquoise and Maeve was delighted, you should have seen her sparkle. We went and booked our flights to Chiang Mai and Maeve went off sunning herself for the day. She got her day in the sun and is really turning golden brown (Sorry to the sun deprived, milky skinned girls in Dublin).
As we didn't do too much I really don't have too much to write about, lying out in the sun is not my kind of thing and I don't think it merits a blow by blow account. The highpoint of Koh Samui was the scenery of the beach when the sun did grace us and also our 30 minutes out on a jet-ski. I found it much more exciting and exillirating than wondering if I was getting
a balanced burn on each of my arse cheeks. We both had a go driving/sailing the thing it was really exciting jumping over waves and crashing back down again before being launched up again.
Also our beachside cottage was a highlight. We rented a nice cottage just 100 feet from the beach in a nice small complex. There was a nice pool and the cottage was really nice and comfy with a/c, balcony and satelite tv. It was cool to head off bearfoot (no more smelly sandals) up or down the beach for a swim or to a restaurant or bar or for a nice massage, just 4 Euros for 30mins. Pure heaven, except for when they use the tiger balm on your back - it burns. On saturday night we walked up the beach to a really cool beach party where they had cool music, fire dancers, mad lights and cheap booze, needless to say a good time was had by all. I'll try to put up a video but my 2 attempts so far to host videos have not gone too well. (I fear this is not the best travel blog website around)
The Thai people are really
well suited to tourism as they are genuine, friendly and want to help as much as possible. Maeve was very impressed and is really enjoying her time here, especially the food. The only annoying people are the Tailors who really try to 'annoy' you into their shops. Nobody else really bothers beyond a cheery "How can I help you Sir?" or "You want genuine watch?".
The tailors on the other hand are you 'friend', 'mate' or 'buddy' and tell you how good a job they can do or how they have just the suit for you and they'll follow (bug) you up the street as far as the next tailor shop. They usually start by trying to talk to you in an Irish or English accent - 'Evening Guv'ner" -- as soon as they see the disgust in my face and realise they've picked the wrong side of the Irish sea. They quickly change to a "All rit bud, wats da storreeyyyy" which I think I hate even more but no fear, a polite Fuck off usually sees them dissapear. I think they must be used to it by now as there are so many Irish and English over here
Chez Nous
Our Beachside cottage now, it's just like Lanzarote or Torremelinos.
Anyway we're off to more cultural climes in the North of Thailand in Chiang Mai. It is the 2nd city of Thailand and a really cool place. We're hoping to go elephant riding in the jungle, bargain hunting in the cool night bazaar and do a proper Thai - cookery course.
