Auto pilot? or Cruise Control
Dad says it's auto pilot in the desert. GRAND CANYON DAY
We were up early the next day and hit the road after a quick breakfast. We had about 5 hours of driving to do before we hit the canyon. We started out by driving through the Mojave. It was flat and barren. The speed limit in Arizona was 80 though, so Brian put the car on cruise control so we wouldn't loss time by getting pulled over. We drove out of California and into Arizona. There was a giant wind farm in California. Hundreds of them in several sizes on the hillsides for about 180 of the view.
We got to the canyon around 2. We were on the south rim and there were alot of people. We were lucky to find somebody pulling out to get a parking spot. The canyon was just beautiful. The colors and the shadows were outstanding even with the slightly hazy conditions. I took a ton of photos because the views seemed to be endless. We walked a mile or so along the rim. I was suprised by people with little kids, younger than 2 oe 3, who were out next to the edge. The dropoff in places was thousands of
feet. The elevation was 7,000 feet. You could see a muddy Colorado River winding through the canyon in a couple places.
We drove out along the "desert view" which gave us several more looks at the canyon along the way. We stopped to take pictures of a couple signs and a coyote along the way (see photos). The road out of the canyon and back to the freeway was long, and through parts of at least two Indian reservations. I can't imagine that the different tribes were happy to be that close together when they were forced onto the reservations.
We passed between a couple of thundershowers in the open desert. There was a storm on each side of us that you could see lightening, but we never got wet. Each had a rainbow as well. It was certainly odd looking. I'm not sure the picture does it justice. Brian wanted to drive into the night, but after the long day before, it was best that he stopped before too long. So we stopped just short of the New Mexico border.
