6 Foot and Clean
Ericeira has once again turned it on for us. This spot is perhaps my favorite place in Europe. Mostly reef breaks it's shape and consistency are legendary and yesterday I saw it at 6 foot. A size the locals say is the minimum for them to go out.. or the more bravado of the locals. Ericeira has been good to me over the years and it didn't disappoint. It's got great food, friendly locals (unless you violate one of the rules of surfing!), cheap and has great waves. We have been here for a week and a half now and relaxed right into the place. We have met a german couple Lars and Nina. Nina is in surf school with Debbie and I've been surfing with Lars. We have also met a Dutch couple who we bumped into in Costa Nova in Aveiro and then again here. Van's in Portugal is the way to go!. Debs has been in surf school most of the time and just brought a wetsuit and booties and contemplating a 7.4 mini Malibu as the next purchase!!.. We found a great little surf school located in Ribeira D'ilhas which is a 10 minute walk from the

camp site which in turn is only a ten minute walk from town so ideally located. The teachers at the surf school are great and are in process of turning Debs into a surfer chick, well one who rides the smaller waves. Her teacher is a guy called Joy who is a surf instructor, spinning teacher and all round nice guy. Also in her class is a kiwi called Dan whom is having a great time. They seem to put people on the right size boards here and then just direct them into the right spot to take the right wave.. wish I'd had that when I learnt!!.. As for me well I'm slowly getting my paddle fitness back and enjoying riding the waves. Unfortunately I think I needed a month of paddle fitness before the 6 foot sets came as it was quite a frustrating day just not quite catching the waves I wanted to or just being slightly too late and slammed.. but hey that's surfing I've had some mint little waves on the other days and loads of fun. It is great being back in the ocean and reminds me why I want to move to a

place where I can be in the ocean much more regularly!!!!.. We plan on staying here for another week until almost the end of July then heading all the way North back to Vannes to get a week with cousin Pete whom also has the amazing life of being able to get in the ocean when ever he wants. After visiting Pete we will go inland to the Loire and then north to the Normandy beaches before crossing back into England in a months time. But hey Portugal it's the place to be!!.

Ericeira looks bliss from here. So enjoying following your trip. Rapidly thinking a van instead of a canal boat might be the way to go. cheaper anyway. We are awaiting a low with a centre of 966hpa to blow and flood us away this weekend. All hatches battened down. Soak up some sun for us. Lots of love, Mum
