Saturday the 12th July
That night went for a few beers in the bar that is in the hostel. A lively spot where people mingle freely. Ended up starting a drinking game with a few Irish lads. It got the show on the road. One of the lads was called Jason Melvin from Ballina, told him i had cousins in ballina and he said he knew them well. Went out into the town with those boys. Cusco has a great night life, I probably shouldnt stay here too long or it might be dangerous.
Sunday the 13th July
Myself and Oscar got some horses to some of the Inca ruins around Cusco. The horse was fierce slow but was better than walking up those hills. The most spectacular ruin of the day was Sexy Woman spelt somewhat differently but pronounced pretty much the same. Anyways I liked Sexy Woman an awful lot, lots of square edges and not too many curves though. There was a kind of slide carved into the side of the hill at sexy woman, so of course i slid down sexy woman ripping off the sking on each elbow on the way down. Injury
number 1 of the trip. Some english guy said you have to be irish to do something stupid like that. I was wearing my irish jersey at the time. He was one smart tan. I said go and have a shite for yourself.
The corn on the cob here is huge. just so you know
That night i kept away from the crazy irish lads but met up with an english couple and a french girl in the bar. So out myself and oscar went again. I love this town. In the morning I asked oscar how did we get home. He didnt know either. He is definately one of the boys.
Monday the 14th
Myself oscar and the french girl from the night before, Babette, decided we would do the salkantay trek together so we found one in a travel agency for 190US, great value since it can be 420US on the net. The trek was starting at 5 o clock the following morning so an early night for once.
Visited some othe ruins that day at Pisaq and that night went to see some a local live music with panpipes. Great stuff. Then off
to bed early
Tuesday the 15th
Started the trek. Got a bus at 5.30 for about 2 hours to the start of the trek. We had a group of 12 people Myself, Oscar and Babette, Steve an aussie, Danny and Nat and aussie couple, Erick and Isabelle from belgium, Linda and William from Scotland and Ester and Franny from switzerland. The group turned out to be great craic. I wont go into details of each day but basically we trekked through the mountains to a height of 4600m from 2900m. We trekked through barren land, beside a snow capped mountain, up and down valleys and into a cloud forest which is the closest thing to a jungle that i have ever been in and finally we ended up in machu pichu. It was an amazing experience. The food was good enough, we had a cook and a guide who came with us. The highlights were passing the 4600m mark and reaching machu pichu, drinking in the tent with the group of 12 people, having the odd sing song, i sang galway girl with the help of a guitar borrowed from a local with one of the strings having a
knot in the middle where it previously snapped. Galway girl went down well much to the amusement of a few galway girls who wer camping beside us. Its crazy the amount of Irish over here.
One down point was on day two i turned into some sort of a water feature with liquid coming out all ends. Something i ate apparently. Some craic running for the bushes in that kind of condition, but i goy over it pretty quickly with the help of some imodium.
On the last day we reached machu pichu and it just takes your breath away no matter how many photos you have seen before. Those incas were crazy.
Got into cusco last night at ten and saturday night in cusco is just banging so Myself Oscar babette and steve the aussie from the trek just had to go out.
Sunday the 20th July
Babette left for france this morning but steve the aussie has decided to travel with myself and oscar into bolivia. Also the galway girls we met during the trek are staying in our hostel and are going into bolivia with us aswell. Its crazy the ammount of people
I have already met.
Finally today I ate a guinea pig. Looked like a cooked rat on the plate. But sure when in rome. Tasted like chicken. But still it looked like a rat. Too many bones for my taste but was fairly nice.
Chilling out here in cusco today and tomorrow and then off to bolivia on tuesday..........
