The brave explorers today ventured into Rostock, Germany a 40 minute train and tram ride. First stop St Mary’s Church. A 5705 pipe, ornate floor to ceiling organ, renaissance style pulpit and a early astronomical clock (1472) which has calculated Easter dates until the year 2017!! A browse around the remaining town sites city gates, botanical gardens, University Square. Two fantastic shops: a bike shop where Alex could have brought home 4 bikes, and the best shoe shop where if they had my size I’d have spent out!!

We took the train back into Warnemunde - the beach town where the ship is moored. Here we ate freshly caught butterfish that had been smoked on the pier side - divine! Then a walk up to West Mole Lighthouse and back along the sea promenade showered with cafes and boutiques. The beach was busy. Turns out it’s the 2008 Lifesaving World Championships so there were lots of teams practising events in the sea. One team were doing rope drills on their hotel balcony! We ended our day climbing 24.7m up to the top viewing platform of Warnemunde lighthouse…..and I don’t do heights! The narrow, tightly spiralled staircase made me somewhat dizzy too, but I hung on bravely at the top to snap the oddly fashioned, multi-coloured wicker beach chairs on the beach.

Six more hours of walking….that means plenty of energy stores to replenish later. Last night we ventured to the Italian restaurant, but tonight I have a feeling we will be back in the peasant buffet or ‘The Zoo’ as one very nice lady called it yesterday!
