It was only two weeks before our scheduled departure. Sara and I drove up to Squamish, BC with Justin, a friend of ours, for a quick bouldering excursion. The weather, however, was not on our side. We sat disheartened to see the beautiful Squamish boulders soaking in the rain, rendering them unclimbable.

Our last day in Canada began with an incredible sunrise and a wonderfully dry day. We set out to the boulders to find only a few with enough sun exposure to be dry. The others still soaked in the dark of the forest.

It happened around mid-day. Sara started another attempt at the one-move boulder problem Alien Within when some strange leg contortion brought her immediately back off the wall wincing, and in pain. Every attempt at straightening her right leg was futile. It wouldn't go.

Justin and I helped her hobble her way back to the car after we carried all of our things back and packed up the campsite. One quick stop for milkshakes and off we were, back to Seattle. We tried not to think much of it affecting our trip. We were sure she'd be right as rain by the 23rd of June. Boy, were we wrong.

After a week and a half of visits to many different doctors it was determined that Sara had torn and folded her medial meniscus, and she was scheduled for surgery only a few days before our scheduled take-off. Four weeks later, Sara is 2/3 through her time in a leg brace that keeps her leg straight, and has about 6 weeks of physical therapy after that.

But Sara and I are no quitters. Once we got the bad news that we would not make our flight, we found a way to reschedule. A couple calls to the travel agent, and we now have a new itinerary:

Depart Seattle: September 10
Arrive Amsterdam: September 11
We'll then proceed to make the same bike tour through Europe, ending in Vienna.
Depart Vienna: November 18
Arrive Seattle: November 18

Expect to start seeing some exciting posts and pictures starting in September!
