I'm Hungry !!
Tim didn't like the FRESH eggs !! Can you imagine getting up at 7:30 in the morning and looking out the window to see little ducks crossing the dirt road and horses playing with each other in the grassy fields ? Well, that's how my morning started and it was so peaceful, I wish everyday could be like this one. I was anxious to see how Tim was feeling, so after I got ready, I started getting him up. He tossed around for a few minutes and then he jumped up like an old pro. He seemed to be a lot better today and boy were we both glad of that. Sometime around 9:30 we headed out, but before we got too far, we stopped at the San Juan River Kitchen for some breakfast. This place was a really neat little diner type restaurant that was locally owned by a lady who grew her own vegetables and gathered fresh eggs from out back. I had the breakfast burrito which was pretty good but Tim only ate a few bites off his plate. He said that the eggs tasted really weird to him !Mexican Hat was calling our name, so we headed down Highway 163 to see what all
Breakfast Burrito !!
We had breakfast in Bluff, Utah at the San Juan River Kitchen before heading out to Mexican Hat. the fuss was about. I must say that we never figured out what all the fuss was about !! We drove an hour (round trip) all the way down to Mexican Hat and back, just to see a rock formation that sorta looked like a Mexican Hat. Well, you have to live and learn and after all, it was in Lynn's book and I got to mark it off the list !! You check out the picture and see what you think ! We back-tracked up Highway 163 and merged onto Highway 162 to make our way over to the "Four Corners Monument". This is the only point in the United States common to four state corners. Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico all touch each other in this corner and you can stand in one spot and be in all four states at the same time. This was really really cool !! Tim and I stood in the center of the monument and kissed each other in four states at one time !! The corner officially sits in the Navajo Nation so the Navajo Indians actually own the corner and operate the visitor's center. They also have about 50
Good Bye Bluff !
A view leaving Bluff and heading out towards Mexican Hat ! booths surrounding the monument where you can shop and enjoy some of the local food such as fry-bread and honey. I couldn't get Tim to try any so we skipped the food part and just wondered around looking at all the jewelry and pottery and stuff. By this time, the sun had reared it's ugly head and the heat was on !! We did spend about an hour at this site and I would definitely recommend you going to see it if you're ever in the area. Next, we were off to Mesa Verde National Park near Cortez, Colorado. Technically, I had already been in Colorado at the Four Corners, but now I really got to cross the state line. This would make for our 19th state line, but 20th if you count New Mexico at the Four Corners !! Twenty states in thirty-three days plus Canada, it's still hard for me to believe !! I'm not sure if it was the breakfast burrito, the blazing sun, the extremely high elevation or the long ride over to Mesa Verde, but I was starting to feel really sick. As soon as we made it to the park, we headed for the
Do You See A Mexican Hat ?
We drove all the way down there for this !! visitor's center to get a brochure and figure out what we wanted to do while we were there. We watched the wild horses from the balcony as they played in the field with the deer and then we went in to check it out. It must have been our lucky day because there were only 2 tickets left for the tour of the largest cliff dwelling in the park. This tour didn't start until 6:00 and it was only 4:00, so we decided to do one of the self guided tours/hikes in the meantime. We drove out to the starting point of the "Spruce Tree House" hike and began to make our way downhill on foot. About 20 minutes later, we arrived at the prehistoric Anasazi dwelling at the bottom of the canyon. It was an amazing experience to be able to walk around this place and try to imagine what daily life was like for the Anasazi people. We visited here for a little while but I was really getting sick so we headed back up so I could get some cold water. Once we got to the motor home, we turned the air on and I drank some
The San Juan River
We ended up crossing over the San Juan River several times today. water but I wasn't getting any better. We headed on over to the Cliff Palace and waited their until 6:00. I started the tour, but just a few minutes into it, I had to stop because I was getting very nauseous and dizzy. The Ranger said that I was suffering from "Elevation Sickness" and after she told me the symptoms, I agreed ! I had to stay behind back in the motor home while Tim finished the one hour tour. I'm glad he went on without me because he said it was really interesting and an awesome experience. As we were leaving Mesa Verde National Park, we look over to the side of the road and there sat a herd of very large mule deer. We pulled over to watch them and take a few pictures. They just laid there, chewing the grass, like we didn't even exist. Tim kept saying "Patrick would just die if he could see this !" and I think he's right !! We exit the park and head out to Highway 160 which would take us through the Maucos Valley at an elevation of 7400 feet and over the Animas River. This was not helping
The Four Corners Monument
It was pretty cool being in four states at one time ! my elevation sickness at all !!! We finally ended up in this really neat town called Durango, Colorado. We went into town around 9:30 and had pizza at the local pizza parlor and then we anchored down at the Wal-Mart a few miles down the road. This was not your average Wal-Mart. The front facade of the building was crafted out of stacked stone and wooden beams. It looked like a Wal-Mart you would see in Peachtree City or something !! We are off to the Aztec Ruins, Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert tomorrow so pray that the temperature stays under 100 !!
