Being in Pondicherry is like stepping outside of India into another world. The streets are clean, honking is not allowed (in certain areas), French and Italian restaurants abound on the streets, European architecture appears alongside Indian craftsmanship, and the rickshaw drivers speak French! Over 55 languages are spoken in Pondy: Tamil, Telegu, French, English, and Malayalum are the official five languages. Why the influx of so many languages? Pondicherry was ruled by the French for over 100 years, is home to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, and is the town closest to the international community of Auroville.

Founded in 1968, Auroville is an experiment in human unity. The basis upon which it was built is that people of all nationalities and religions should be able to live in peace. Auroville has approximately 1,800 residents representing 38 different nationalities. It's truly heart-warming to see the vision is still alive after 40 years.

We were hoping to do a tour of Auroville and the ashram but unfortunately ran out of time. We did drive around the campus; it seems like a calm, peaceful area conducive to learning and living in harmony.

It took us about 4 hours to make the journey from Chennai. I'm not used to sitting on a bike for that long - I think my ass is a little flatter than it was before the trip 😊
