First few steps in Sydney

I arrived in Sydney on monday morning. The flight was pretty much awful, i should have known that the Japanese (i flew with JAL) aren't very tall people. I was lucky enough though to get a seat with loads of leg room (at the front) from my flight from Heathrow to Tokyo, unfortunately the seat was like sitting on concrete and it was so upright (even with recline). When i was at Tokyo i felt like the living dead. The flight from Tokyo to Sydney wasn't much better although i did have a row to myself, being above the wing and those massive 747 engines isn't the best place in the world to get any sleep. The hostel is very friendly and my room has regulars in it and we all get on well. So the monday when i arrived i should have got some kip but it was a choice between sleep or the bar...and well...you know the rest.

The weather here has been dissapointing, i arrived to rain and only about 15 degrees celcius (i can feel the voodoo dolls in your hands now) and it has been pretty much the same until today which looks at being a scorcher!

Iv'e made some good mates and everyone is really friendly. Most regulars in our room have got nicknames, they aren't very imaginative but i dont come up with them. We have an English girl called Custard (she is from Devon), English bloke called Northern Monkey, German girl called Cologne (she doesn't even live in Cologne), a yank called Oklahoma and a German bloke who has got a nickname but i cant remember. I've now got a nickname...'Essex', yeah i know, you dont need a rocket scientist to work out how they came to that.

I've been wandering around Sydney and i'm loving it, i havent been to the Harbour Bridge yet but i have seen other sights like Darling Harbour. But when i flew in i saw a view that took my breath away, it was the whole of the harbour (with bridge and opera house) and its one of the most amazing views i have ever seen. I'm going to get down to the Harbour in the next few days but iv'e got a few bits and pieces to sort, like employment, a German guy who i've done a bit of drinking with has given me a number to do labouring (putting up marquees) but i need to sort tax number and stuff first (which im doing today).

The bar is good and i have been out drinking once or twice *cough*. I had a drinking contest against 3 Germans and a Swede, things got a bit hazy in the end but the Swede claimed he had finished before me (thats one thing i'll never know)!! Its Karaoke night tonight and i've been reminded that our room (106) has a reputation to uphold (we have won the last 3 weeks in a row). I'll need a few drinks beforehand but Oklahoma, Northern Monkey, and Custard should be going up - the songs are apalling though (Northern Monkey - Achy Breaky Hearty - and thats one of the better ones!).
