This weekend we decided to hire a car and take off on a day trip with our friend Kathleen. Our first destination was the historic, Roman city of Bath. Bath is famous for its hot springs, Roman period baths, Medieval heritage and stately Georgian architecture. The drive to Bath took approximately 2 hours. We made our way to a car park and then wandered the streets and visited the Roman baths. The baths were built by the Romans about 2000 years ago and were later rediscovered by the Victorians. The baths are fueled by England's only mineral hot springs. The hot springs were sacred to the Celtic goddess Sulis, whom the Romans later identified with the goddess Minerva. After we toured the Roman baths we were given a complimentary glass of 'spa water'. We thought that this water would be fantastic...we weren't expecting the water to be warm. It smelled like eggs and it tasted truly awful! Other impressive sites in Bath include the Abbey and the Royal Crescent which is lined with Georgian townhouses.
We left Bath at about 3:30 pm and drove for an hour to Stonehenge. Unfortunately, the road leading up to Stonehenge was ridiculously covered in rubbish

from the Summer Solstice celebrations the night before. Clean-up crews were busy cleaning up the mess as we drove towards the site. Stonehenge is literally a big pile of rocks in the middle of a wide open field right next to the highway. But, it's the most impressive pile of rocks we have ever seen! It's said that Stonehenge was completed in 1600BC. Stonehenge was a great site to visit! Before we left we shopped in the gift shop and then made our way back to Aylesbury. The day trip was a lot of fun and it was really great to drive a car again! We look forward to coming home to Canada to see all of you in only 4 1/2 weeks!
