We have been somewhat surprised by our seemingly rapid progress. We have left Rioja behind us with it´s endless vines. Yesterday morning crossing into Castille y Leon province. We drank our way through several bottles of Rioja whilst in the region, of course only to heighten our cultural integration. By focussing our attention on an increasingly prudent application of the daily budget we were able to invest the evening´s remaining Euros in ever superior bottles of the region´s world famous export. Unfortunately, we didn´t quite hit the Gran Reservas. Although good wine provides more satisfaction than food you still need to spend on a decent few calories to keep up the daily demands of our nomadic existence. Now about 20km short of Burgos, the next major city on our path, the surrounds have changed to more intensive crop farming and also welcome shaded woodland paths to protect us from the increasingly potent midday sun. The small towns, pueblos, that we encounter are becoming more frequent but there is a strange increase in the proportion of delapidated buildings. Although La Rioja took a dip in the general cheer and friendliness from the locals, Castille y Leon appears to have revived the smiles, waves and greetings that we left in Navarra. This is a journey of subtle change requiring careful observation. Spain is gradually revealing itself to us.
