So we hit zurich on sat as we could onlyfly from paris to London via zurich and figured we would make a stopover of it...
Sat night also happened to be the opening of the euro 2008 football championships which Switzerland and Austria are hosting... And naturally the opening game had Switzerland playing, so zurich was party central! Their main streets were blocked off from cars and had food and bar stalls all along them, with a TV not more than a stall away! It was great, everyone was into the football, there were crazy hats, painted faces, flags and beer beer beer! And capirinha's flowing! We grabbed food and intermittently watched the game whilst being swept along by football fever... Even tried to follow a riot squad but they went in to a restricted part so we weren't able to...
Switzerland ended up losing to Czech republic 1-0 but it didn't ruin the party which ran late into the night... Outside our window I am sure! Hehe
On Sunday morning we went and saw zurich as it normmally appears... Quiet, clean and beautiful... The water was so clear and the little cobble street roads adorable... We packed
the maps in our pockets and just wandered which was great... I wish I had longer there away from the foot ball crowd to discover this side of zurich further...
Later that evening we flew to London, got lost funding our hotel, but made it in the end... We got in late, so went out for dinner and that was about it... Both mum and I have been to London previously and done most of the tourist things, so we were content with just exploring our local area a bit... As in bayswater
We picked up our car on Monday to start our cotswolds drive... Have a cute little ford focus, which whilst doesn't sound as impressive as the merc, is a much nicer car to drive! Also we are back on the correct side of the road thank goodness!!!
So we drove to canterbury yesterday to where we were staying... The guy running the place looked like he was pretending to run an inn and reminded us a little of basil faulty with how he acted... On the drive down we stopped in at Rochester castle as it has 13 foot thick walls so r wanted
to check that out! Was a nice little castle that we ran all over and was a good break in our journey to canterbury. After checking in at the hotel, we headed through to Dover, picked up fish and chips (mum had fish I had chips) and went to the white cliffs to watch the world go by... We did try to get in to Dover castle, which is massive, but the road gates were already closed at 5.40 even though they didn't close until 6! Anyway, the cliffs were great and we watched the boat traffic coming in and out of the docks with passengers and cargo from France with much fascination... After eating we went for a walk along the white cliffs and I tried to play with all the cute bunnies that were there but they all hopped off which was even cuter!
Just as the sun was setting we headed back to canterbury both agreeing that we had a really lovely night...
Today we headed to salisbury, but first went to canterbury city for a look around... Saw the cathedral, but didn't go in... Wandered around a bit... Canterbury is so what you think
of as England... Cobble stone streets, little laneways and tea shops rather than cafes hehehe so cute and quaint! Anyway we found the canterbury tales exhibition and also a winnie the pooh shop before deciding we should keep moving... Drove to maidenstone for a glimpse at leeds castle, then kept going through to hever castle... After many wrong turns we finally found it! And it was worth it too! For those of you that don't know, this was the home of Anne boylen who was the second wife of Henry viii, the first to be beheaded, but also mother of queen Elizabeth I. The grounds were gorgeous, and they had 3 mazes!!! We did the one that was made with trees and found our way in and out... So much fun! Then I did a wooden one which I got to climb through... Yay
After wearing ourselves out there we headed to brighton beach... Ok, I didn't know much about brighton other than it was a cool little beach town, which I typically love... The first thing I said however was 'where is the sand?' That's right there is no sand for the beach, which did spark debate as
to whether it was a beach at all... There are pebbles instead... So after my shock and mum's hysteric laughter we went a wandering... There is so much to see and do here! I wish we had longer than the hour we spent there... We drove along the coast road a bit and found the little changing huts like at Melbourne's brighton beach... Continued our drive up to our hotel for the night which is just out of salisbury... Mum is excited as we are in thatch roof country... I am excited as they have yummy vego foods here and plates of veges for the side which were great in my left over sauce... I have been missing my veges...
So that brings you back up to date! We head to plymoth tomorrow, so signal strength permitting I shall update you further
