Guten Tag everyone from East Berlin where I am staying for the next 3 days.

I arrived this afternoon from Budapest. Turns out there was an accident on the railway so I had to take a cab instead... so it goes... I made it on time. Met a couple from Washington State and we shared stories of our travels to pass the time. They were very helpful in helping me to navigate the rail system from Schoenfeld to where my hostel is. Once I arrived, I met one of the other people in my room who happens to be from Waterloo in Canada and so he invited me to join him for lunch. We had currywurst which seems to be a local favourite of bratwurst with curry on top.

Wanting to get to exploring right away I walked about 3 km to the East Gallery which is what is left of the Berlin Wall. This section stretches about 1.5 km and is covered in artists work and of course a lot of graffiti. Amazing to see the incredible height of the wall and to imagine how it divided both East and West Germany for years.

I managed to navigate the metro system, not without a few mistakes and wrong directions. The S-Bahn and U-Bahn intersect and it is at times hard to figure out which way you are going. I ended up at the Brandenburg Gate and took a few photos and then headed to the Reichstag or Bundstag as it is best known. You can tour the upper dome and get some incredible views of the city from above. The Jewish Memorial created just recently is also located not too far away so I walked through there. It is made up of a series of concrete slabs of different sizes. You can walk through them and as you go the ground goes up and down. I think the point is to feel somewhat trapped.

As the sun started to set I headed back here to the hostel... time to get some sleep after a long day of travel and settling in. Tomorrow I will tour about town... with only a few days I am making my list of things to see.

Hope everyone is well. Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of the passing of my Grandpa... he fought in World War II here in Berlin in 1944-45 and in the demobilization... I will honour him as I go around Berlin tomorrow. Please keep my family in your thoughts.

Love to you all from Berlin.

Katy

Ubahn!
Your story about the U-bahn brought back memories of my time in Germany on an exchange at 16 years old. It took getting lost on the U-bahn to make me realize I needed to learn the language and to rely less on my exchange partner! There were many tears shed that day :) and now my german is nicht schlect!! looking forward to hearing all about your adventures in person!!
