Off to the dales to attempt the 3 peaks. Traditionally the 3 peaks are tackled in one day within 12 hours and in fact there is also a yearly race where some athletic dudes cover this 26 mile route over hills/cross country in about 4 hours. We decided to do it in two days, take it easy and enjoy the scenery.
Camped at the starting point and as we would not complete the whole route in one day, we pre-positioned cars at the half way point to take us back to the camp site.
The first hill, Pen-y-ghent - actually welsh, for something like the winding hill, was quite steep on one side which we climbed and it was so steep it was making me a bit giddy, but manageable. We had super weather the first day - hot and sunny and visibility across the dales was very good. The scenery was very nice, lovely rolling hills with lots of sheep, meadows, limestone outcrops and little streams. By the finish point for that day I was knackered and struggled to chat too much after a long hot day. We all went to the Golden Lion pub for food - the food was not brilliant, but there were only two choices of pub and this one was the closest to walk to. We walked down to the Crown pub at the other end of the village and this place seemed a lot nicer with a large open garden.
Back to the campsite and got a good nights rest in preparation for the next days hike.
We drove up to where we finished the day before and commenced our walk up Whernside. This is the second peak, not as steep as the first but weather was a wet/windy and cloudy so the visibility was not great. We decided then, it wouldnt be worth doing the third one in these conditions and had had a good time so will leave till another time.
All our friends had to go home after as they had not been so cunning to book a days holiday on the monday! Neil and I decided to stay another night camping and see if we could do the third peak, Ingelborough the next day.
So we headed to the crown pub and got food there and it was really good. Prawns in garlic (lovely) followed by home made steak and ale pie and steak and chips for neil - really super after a wet day in the hills. We headed back to the tent but due to the damp weather there were thousands of mosquitos out and I got eaten alive. We dived into the tent super quick - put a film on the archos and cosied in for the night. We had another good nights sleep then awoke to a very misty damp day - so our extra stay had been in vein!!!! no point hiking in this - lets go to the Pen-y ghent cafe for breakfast - oh! it doesnt open for another hour because its a monday (quiet day for hiking) - Oh well - got in the car and came home.
The Yorkshire dales is not the most dramatic of hills, but it is so so pretty and charming, relaxing and pleasant to stroll round and we loved it so much that we were determined to go back as soon as possible to get that last peak and maybe one day do them all in one day!
