June 5th. After returning home, we heard back from the realtor about the 2 apartments she was negotiating. She did get us a reasonable price on the one near Mark's office, but we decided to pass. We really wanted the other one, near the park. There are many units in that building, so we are still hopeful. The 1 apartment we wanted is now off the market. So, we have to keep working on the apartment project from home. Mark is likely returning to Shanghai late next week for 2-3 weeks (!). He has work to do there, and also needs to get his health exam for his work visa. We are hoping his visa can help expedite the family visa we need for the kids to attend school.

It feels like months have passed since we were in Shanghai, rather than the few days it's been. This weekend is Nathan's 9th birthday party. Our last set of summer birthdays in Evanston for a while. We are having a bug themed party (I have no idea how I came up with this idea since I'm a fraidy cat. We are building bug motels out of these wooden kits I bought...having a bug hunt (toy bugs) and of course cheeseburgers and cake/ice cream. Nathan requested we go back to basics and do a home based party. I appreciate the sentiment, and am doing what he asked, but I do enjoy the outsourced party.

Because we are moving, Nathan agreed to do a "in lieu of gifts" idea for this year. He is asking his friends to bring a donation for the Evanston Animal Shelter. Pretty cool, right? He's very excited about it. I'm still getting him a few gifts, but we are in prep-to-move mode. The kids know we will get some toys/games in China (where all toys and games are in fact made) and need to travel light.

Emily is having a cooking party at Whole Foods. I have no prep work and no to do list for that event. We just show up and pay. Since her party is in July and we are supposedly moving in early August, I had to go the outsourced route for her party. She did not opt for the charity themed party. Maybe next year. She is 3 years younger than her brother. She said we can just ask people to bring small gifts to her party! That's my girl.

Love the charity-themed party idea. In fact, love the whole riff on kids' parties. Linda
