Hello,
After we arrived in Delhi and checked into our little hostel located in the Main bazaar, we roamed the streets. Delhi is such a busy city. There are people everywhere. There is a lot of poverty and people are just sitting on the side of the road everywhere. It is hard for me to see emaciated little kids and not be able to help them. But that is life. While we were walking we befriended a guy named Ajay who took us to a good place to do some shopping. Lauren and I bought a pashmina to cover our heads. We were getting a lot of attention, being females without males to accompany us, and thought that covering our heads would help. So we've been covering our heads and wearing sunglasses and that has really helped to decrease the amount of attention we're getting.
Yesterday was a pretty busy day. After giving ourselves a chance to acclimate to the bustling city of Delhi we hired a driver for the day for about 12 dollars. First we went to the Red Fort, then we went to Jamas Masjid ( the largest mosque in India). We had to take our shoes off in the mosque and it was so hot that I felt like I was walking on blacktop. It was really neat to get a chance to be inside a mosque. Then we went to Raj ghat, which is where Ghandi's cremated remains rest. Then we went to an amazing little hole in the wall restaurant, and got a masala dosa ( which is curried vegetables in a rice based wrap) and a thali ( which seemed to be rice and a bunch of different veggie curries). After lunch, we went to the India Gate and Qutab Minar. After we got home from all of this we went to watch some traditional Indian dancing and then finally went to bed. It was a pretty long day and we were both exhausted after being in the heat all day. I think I drank about literally 5 liters of water yesterday. Thankfully water is very cheap here. It is about 10 rs for a bottled liter, which is roughly 20 cents.
Today we hired a driver and took a 4.5 hour drive to Agra. while we were driving we saw camel drawn carts, an elephant and monkeys. We were both pretty excited. I like to look out the window and see how many people they can cram on an autorickshaw or on a moped. The record for the moped is 4 people and I think we counted like 15 inside an autorickshaw. Once we finally got to Agra we checked into our hotel, we splurged an extra dollar and got AC. We then went to Agra Fort. Tomorrow we are getting up early to go to the Taj Majal for sunrise and then will go to Fatephur Sikri, a ghost town nearby. Then we have to catch an overnight train to Varnasi. It is going to be a busy day. More later. Hopefully some of these photos will load. This computer keeps shutting down automatically.
