San Francisco Part Deux

After Yosemite we got back in to SF early afternoon where I strolled around a few more photo spots and did some window shopping. The evening was spent with 2 people from my tour strolling around North beach and having a bite to eat. The view of the coast from the resturant was really good, but was beaten by the suset over the Golden Gate Bridge which followed. (That was then followed by a yummy ice cream!)

On Thursday I took a Muir Woods and Sonoma trip. First stop was the Muir woods which have a large number of coastal redwoods. These are a relative of the giant sequoias I saw in Yosemite. These are taller than the giants sequoias, but thinner. They were impressive, and very hard to photograph, but I found the width of those in Yosemite more impressive than the height of these.

We then went to 3 different Sonoma wineries. These were all quite small, family establishments. At the first, Cline, we had a private tasting of 5 wines, none of which I liked. We then went inside and had a choice of a much larger number from which I found 1 or 2 which I could have drank all day! Of course they were the most expensive of those the winery had on offer! The second winery was even smaller, and was called Larson family winery. Again we had 5 to taste and I didn't like any! This was not a good wine day for me.

After the first 2 wineries we went to Sonoma town for luch which was very pretty to stroll around nd have an ice cream! The 3 winery, Viansa, then followed, and it was this I found most impressive. Here we were given an explanation how to taste wine, and I found some of the white wines on offer delicious. Unfortunately you can only buy direct from them, within the US. Thankfully though they were the priciest establishment so I just enjoyed my tasters. This third winery was also the best located on top of a hill with amazing views of the surrounding vines etc.

On the return journey our driver held a quiz asking a question about what makes the redwood trees not burn well. No one seemed able to answer so I piped up, and won myself a $28 wine from the last of the 3 wineries. (Its tanic acid) Mum, dad, hopefully this will make it home for you to have a taste!

Rather than get the bus all the way back to SF i was dropped of at Saucilito and had a stroll around before getting the ferry back. The views of SF and the Golden Gate Bridge from the ferry made it worth the extra $7.

So today is my last day in SF before I join my Green Tortoise trip. I have spent the day strolling round the different neighbourhoods and eating my weight in ice cream. I also went to the Coit tower for further views of SF. I then went to the cheesecake factory for lucnh which was MASSIVE, but I still found room for a chocolate and rasberry swirl cheesecake. I now plan to just continue trying to get my tan started before I leave at 7pm for Zion.

wine
You shouldn't have mentioned the wine. If you decide to drink it or manage to break it on your travels we will be very disappointed.
