Many of the buildings in San Telmo date from the mid 19th century.

On Sunday, April 27, I went a tour to San Telmo with Julieta, Liz, Bill, Sebastian, & Ravi. We rode the city bus although it’s almost close enough to walk from the Tango House. San Telmo is the oldest neighborhood in the city. It was abandoned by the rich residents in the mid 19th century due to an outbreak of Yellow Fever. Many of the old buildings are still standing and have never been rebuilt. In the last few years, it has been getting a face lift with lots of new shops and restaurants. There is a famous flea market on Sundays on Defensa. After our afternoon wandering, we were ready to dance (of course) and took a taxi up to the Belgrano neighborhood where we went to the Milonguita (Jorge Newbery), which is one of my favorite milongas.

On Monday April 28, Tota and I took the bus to the Inmigracion office near Retiro. I was worried because I have a replacement passport and it doesn’t have my original entry stamp. The Immigration office is a chaotic place, with what appears to be hundreds of people waiting in line to be helped. Amazingly, after a short wait, we

were able to talk to someone with a computer who found me in his database. He found that I had legally entered the country from Uruguay and my passport is stamped thus. Thus, thanks to my weekend trip to Uruguay last month, I should have no problem leaving Argentina.
