We ran to the top!!
We headed down from Airlie Beach to Hervey Bay on a lovely overnight greyhound coach. From here, we embarked on our 3 day, 2 night trip to Fraser Island, a ruddy great island made just of sand. We sorted out all the important details before we left...what alcohol to take, and then we met our group of 9 others who we were going to share the jeep with. We were a bit dubious about doing it in a group, but it was much cheaper and turned out to be brilliant! Our group were all really nice, thank god, and there were only a few minor arguments involving a drunken aussie and a very very drunk man from Bognor.

Anyway, we took the ferry over to the island and were let loose on the island in our jeep. We were given an itenerary to follow so we got to see all the great stuff. We went to dunes, creeks, pools, saw lots of coloured rocks (?!) and a massive ship wreck just off the shore. We also went to the most amazing beach in Australia at Lake McKenzie, the sand was so white and the water was an amazing turquoise, it was fantastic. The trip was really great and we both got to drive the jeep on the sand, which is very bizarre but so much fun, although you have to lookout for 'washouts' (drops of about a foot in the sand full of water) which can make you roll if you're going too fast...! Thankfully, we didn't roll or have any bumps, although some of the driving done by the group wouldn't be out of place on the one way system in Dartford and we did get stuck in the sand a few times.

We stayed in a base camp on Catherdral beach which was very luxurious in camping terms! We had hot water and a bbq and stayed in very nice tents, away from any dingoes (wild aussie dogs). In the evenings we sat on the beach, watching for shooting stars and having a few drinks (some people had far too much to drink, we found one Irish man wondering around in his boxers). It was a really fun experience and met some great people doing it.

The next stop was Brisbane. We headed here mainly to go to the legendary Australian Zoo, where Mr. Irwin entertained people by holding his baby in front of crocs. It was a very long journey to get there, we spent 4 hours at the zoo and 6 hours travelling! It was a great zoo though and full of loads of pictures of Steve and his family. There were lots of crocs and loads of Koalas. We had a photo with a male one called Leno, he was really cute and cuddly but he pooed all over Kate! Obviously a sign of affection... We stroked kangaroos (which are suprisingly soft! They taste so good though), wombats, koalas and baby crocs.

Apart from the zoo, we didn't really do much in Brisbane. We unfortunately got there when there was an aussie bank holiday, meaning there were drunk people everywhere! We did manage to watch a great street entertainer though, he could fit himself through a tennis racquet!! Madness. We spent Rich's birthday in Brisbane, but it wasn't very successful due to the drunken bank holiday...we ended up having a Subway for dinner! We love foot long subs, so we were quite happy.

We are now in Byron Bay, planning to do a spot of surfing, before heading down to Sydney.
