Hi all! Welcome to Kevin and Amarryn’s first travel blog post! Mark this day on your calendars, it’s going to be historic. Here you can keep up to date with our vagabonding and contact us on the road. Follow along as we travel from country to country, get tossed in a few jails, and maybe become host to a few exotic parasites! You’ve probably heard us babbling on about this “trip.” If we haven't already bored you with the details then I'll go ahead and do so now. We're planning a backpacking trip around the world for a year or two.
Backpacking? You mean camping and sleeping in tents every night? No. I mean staying in hotels and hostels and traveling quite comfortably but just having backpacks instead of suitcases. However, that doesn’t rule out the occasional sleeping in tents on top of mountains or sleeping in hammocks in the rain forest. We don’t mind roughing it, but it’s nice to know we have options.
Why are you doing this? We just so happen to be in that period of life called “It's Now or Never.” This is going to be our last fling with adventure before
we have to start having kids and getting real jobs. As a matter of fact, we're not 100%!s(MISSING)ure what those real jobs are going to be, so hopefully this trip will give us some perspective. I myself have had a hard time deciding on a career because once I do, that's it, that's how I'll forever define myself and all other options seem suddenly cut off. The last couple of years we've had a general idea of what we should be doing with doing day to day, but felt like we were working towards things that would always stay in the future. We decided that we would do something for “now” instead of hoping for some mythical pot of gold after retirement. We've been looking at people of the same age who are having kids, into their careers, and working 80 hours a week, and the majority are unhappy. So are they doing the responsible thing or are we? We've always been the type of people who enjoy being open to new experiences, new cultures, and new ways of seeing things. We've already backpacked through Europe a few years ago and have been completely changed.
Where are you going?
We've decided to buy tickets point-to-point instead of buying an Around the World Ticket. This will allow us to choose how long we want to stay in a place, we'd be able to change destinations last minute, and if one of us gets injured or we're sick of traveling we can just come home. The cost doesn't seem to be all that different. We're going to start in South America, (Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina) Central America (Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, and Nicaragua). This should take us few months. After that we'll probably come home for a few weeks for a quick break to see family and friends. I’ve been trying to study Spanish for this leg of the journey. “Estoy demaciado borracho. ¿Dónde esta el baño?” Pretty good, huh?
Then we'll hop over to New Zealand and Australia, up to South East Asia, Japan, and China, then hit India on the way to North Africa and the Middle East, and finish off the trip in Europe. Phew!
Are you guys rich? How much will this cost? I'm about to say two things that nobody ever believes. 1. The longer you travel the cheaper it becomes, not only because plane rides are stretched further apart, but because you learn over time how to save money in each destination. Longer travel necessitates getting rid of your apartment and canceling your bills, which frees us a lot of money. 2. I pay less money backpacking than sitting on my butt and paying rent in the U.S. It's true, and that was with our meager serving / bar tending wages. So after realizing that we didn't have to spend all our money on video games / movies / cigarettes / energy drinks and everyday throw-aways, saving for travel became surprisingly easy and automatic.
How can we keep in touch? We're bringing a laptop with us to try and respond to email / comments whenever possible, but, given that many of the places we're going may not have WiFi or internet cafes, it might not be as often as I'd like. I'm also hoping to update this travel blog which theoretically should send out automatic emails to everyone on my list. You're invited to leave questions or comments. We'll also be using the computer as a poor man's cell phone, using Skype. Make sure you hit the SUBSCRIBE button before you leave.
When are you leaving? We getting some last minute things ironed out so we're planning on leaving in July or August, but it may get pushed back (we were originally planning to leave in January of 08). We’re hoping to have a huge party right before we leave, so stay tuned!

Vagabonding?
Vagabonding? Did you just make a noun into a verb? Like Googling? Are you telling me that Ammi gave up energy drinks? I don't believe you...liar, liar I say.
