Don DetDon DetDon Det

We finally made it to Don Det, in the 4000 islands, where water buffalo roamed the street
So after our horrible experience crossing the border we arrived at the 4,000 islands...which is a bunch of island in a river! Very beautiful but hard to apperciate at first because of the anger towards the day! We went to find a place to stay and thought our luck had changed when we found rooms with fans! Well they did have fans but only between 6-9 pm...not sleeping hours!! So when we went to bed, we felt like we were sitting in an oven! Soph and Sylvie had windows on the side (not much help) but mine and Dave's were only in front, where anyone could reach in and take our things (no screens on the windows of course)...So we snuck into one of the other rooms slept there for the night and snuck back to our own room at 6 in the morning (no one was the wiser)! Very sleepily the next morning the girls headed out to give this place a fresh chance, and we were glad we did! We went to see a rare type of dolphin indigenous to Laos, there are only about 100 or so left and we were lucky to see quite a few! We

The very shiny gold temple in Vientiene
also went to see the biggest waterfall in South East Asia, it was beautiful like a small Niagara Falls! We relaxed in the afternoon and tried to sleep!
In the morning, tired and bug bitten, we took a bus to Pakse, a very dull town. That night we took the bus to Vientiene! When we arrived at 6 in the morning all we wanted was electricity and hot showers...Dave and I stayed in bed all day catching up on sleep, while the S's took in the sites! That night we found a great Martini bar...enough said!!
The next day we took a bus to Vang Vieng, the town known for it's tubing! Soph found us great bungalows on the river and it was beautiful and peaceful (until night time when the newly arrived backpacker bars started pumping their music, let's say we were happy curfew was 12...we are old!!) That night we discovered the Friends bars, these are bars that play Friends all day and night (till curfew at 11) and we returned all three nights! The next afternoon we went tubing, where you rent a tube and make your way down the river stopping at bars along the way (wine coolers good, vodka bucket bad, Lao Lao whisky worse). We also tried one of the very safe and not sketchy ziplines into the water! While in Vang Vieng we also went trekking/caving with a guide. We went to four different caves, some very deep, it was cool to see a cave with out lights and stairs..though we did get Dave's fave flashlight on your head! The coolest part of this experience was that we got to go in a cave filled with water and paddle our way through it in tubes! Finally we got to see a Hmong village, which is the same tribe as ones we visited in Sapa, which was interesting. Though this one was a polygamist village, Dave lloked like he fit in with his three women!
Our last stop in Laos was Luang Prabang, a nice city filled with temples and the royal palace. A really great place to walk aroung (says Sophie)! It has a very relaxed feel with great cafes and a cool night market! Soph and Dave rented bikes (I of course can't ride a bike, I know I am special) and cursed around. Dave also had to get

p.s. for all you haters, I think Dave's facial hair is SEXY!!!

The ladies wait by the river, not knowing what to expect.
They'll never learn.They'll never learn.
They'll never learn.

Amy and Sophie decide a large bucket of vodka and 7up is a good idea. The hangover kicked in at 8pm.

Just Say no

Never tell an elderly Laotian women who runs a bar that you will drink the awful Lao whisky if she does. Because she will. And you'll be sorry.

Light on head + exploring caves = Indiana Jones fantasies. If only I had the hat.

A nice city to walk around (said Sophie, repeatedly) with a similar feel to HoiAn in Vietnam.
