in Comordo Rivadavia Wow. I can´t believe that I am FINALLY writing a blog in the present tense. Right now we are in Esquel after 49 hours of bus travel (almost 15 hours of which was spent waiting in Comordo Rivadavia from 5:30am till 10pm). This was not much fun. We found a big mud and dirt escarpment behind the city that we walked to the top of. The city was in a very dry, stark setting and with its dirt escarpments, it looked a little like a mini Lima. At least, what I imagine Lima looks like, as I have not been there yet. We also found a beach to walk along, but I am always disappointed by beaches and this one was no different. The town sewerage is pumped out only about 10 meters from the shore and stinks. These two walks killed about two hours, leaving us with 13 or so left. I hate the expression ¨killing time¨, and I rarely use it, but that is what we were doing in Comodoro Rivadavia.
We were planning to stay in Esquel until Sunday, meet up with Laurence and Phillpe and then head off on a walk. We are feeling tourism fatigue
Very cool old cars, busses, and a caravan
It looks straight out of Motorcycle diaries and feel we need to do our own thing again for a bit, so Jono came up with the idea of walking along a rail way that goes from Esquel to just 50 km outside of El bolson. The line is about 160km all together. The railway is only used these days by one lone steam train, run purely for tourists. Very exciting... BUT
As I write, there is a volcano less than 100km away spewing ash all over the city. In some areas there is apparently up to 15 cm of ash. AS I was walking to this internet cafe, it was raining ash. It was 3pm and almost dark. It is kind of exciting to have a volcano erupting over us. Not something that happens to you every day and as far as we know it is safe where we are, but it might change our plans. We will wait and see, I guess. At least we have found a cheap place to stay and there are two cycle tourists at the same place so I think we might have ourselves a bit of a party tonight. We are both really keen to do some cycle touring
some time (with our new bikes) so might spend some time plugging these guys for tips. I guess Marty (Jono´s bro) will be a good person to talk to about this too... One of these guys goes by the name of Marty, funnily enough.
Oh, and back to the volcano, it made me think of a funny story from Chiloe that I forgot to put in this blog, so I am going to tell you about it now while I wait for the photos to finish uploading. Wow. I really like writing in the present tense! heheh. So, yes, the Chiloe story. It was our first night in the strange hostel run by the strange Pinochet supporter in the strange Port town, so everything felt a little strange anyway and I felt on edge for some reason. I was lying there thinking about what would happen if there was a fire, because there was no fire exit. A friend of ours from Canada, Barb, had lost a friend the year before in South America when the hostel she was staying in burnt down. I don´t know why I was thinking of it when I was trying to sleep, but
that just happens sometimes. Then I started deliriously wondering whether the owner might be an axe murderer... haha. Somehow though I did manage to get to sleep. But then we were woken by a very strange and very persistent alarm. It did not sound like any normal alarm or siren, and we started to wonder whether it was a Tsunami warning. Chile is very active for tsunami´s, earth quakes and volcanoes, and we were right on the beach, so it was a troubling thought. We got out of bed and walked out of the room to see if we could see people leaving town, and couldn´t, so we assumed it must be ok, but we were definitely a little concerned. We found out the next day that someone had burnt down the Lions Club, and the alarm was from the fire station to wake up all the local fire fighters. haha. Ok. Photos are done, and I now owe 10 pesos for the computer time. Eeeek. Time to go and make dinner, so adios for now.
