From Arlie Beach we continued the bus journey to Harvey Bay to visit Fraser Island. The trip was booked through Palace Adventures, and at 6.15am we met in a room of about 60 backpackers and were split into groups of 9 or 10, given a talk about Fraser Island and what to expect in the next few days. The group was quick to bond and we got together to devise a shopping list then it was into our 4WD vehicle, get the shopping, and head to the ferry for the crossing.
Fraser Island is the largest sand Island in the world stretching over 123km in length and reaching 25km at its widest point. The Island presents a number of natural wonders including rain-forests, lakes, cliffs, beaches and the odd Dingo. Besides the natural beauty of the Island the real experience is driving the 4WD over the sandy terrain and enjoying the company of the group.
After Fraser we traveled to Brisbane and met up with Pearl, a friend we made at Fraser Island. We done the usual city activities of window shopping, Bus tour and Botanic gardens but as an extra we treated ourselves to a night on the
town, and went to see Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera musical in the QPAC theatre. Musicals aren’t my most favorite past-time but this performance was amazing and the set was spectacular! I recommend it!
Our last stop in Queensland was a beach town called Byron Bay. As with most of the small towns on the East Coast there is a relaxed atmosphere and plenty to do. The first day we walked up to the lighthouse which is situated on the most easterly point of the mainland. On Sunday we tried our hand at surfing and booked a 3h surfing lesson on the Bay, this was a good experience.
Our last stop is in Sydney before we fly out to China on Wednesday 30 April.
