Whitsundays
Hill Inlet overlooking Whitehaven Beach Hello Everyone!
Well we left Noosa and got the overnight bus up to Airlie Beach, thankfully I think it shall be our last over night one as we are very nearly in Cairns, the end to our East Coast journey. We stayed at Magnums hostel right in the centre and got a well cheap room of our own with a fridge, kettle and AC it was so good, we are getting far to used to our own rooms and will take bad going back to dorms!!
We were in Airlie Beach for 2 reason, first of all to go and see the Whitsundays and secondly to see the Old Firm on the 27th, as we didnt think would get it so easily on Magnetic island our next stop. We decided to do just a day trip to the Whitsundays instead of the typical 2 night backpacker trip, mainly due to dwindling money and time! Also because Martyn really wanted to go snorkling on the actual Great Barrier Reef and it is really only the day trip boats that have the right tickets and access to the spots on the reef. So we got our boat and everything sorted for
the Saturday straight away when we arrived and found an Irish Bar that was showing the game, not an ideal venue but hey beggars cant be choosers!
We then spent the next 2 days relaxing by the Lagoon, which is really a very big outdoor swimming pool. There is no actual beach that you can swim in in Airlie Beach as there is hundreds of jellyfish (and sharks!) in the water, so they built the Lagoon, its really nice and I liked the change instead of going into the sea and the waves trying to drown me all the time! We went out on Thurs night and had a great night out, I took lots of pics, but my camera lead is not working so cant get them on the computer until they are on CD, nothing is going right with my camera these days!!
So on the saturday we got picked up nice and early and went to our boat, called Whitehaven Express. There was not too many people at all which is always good and there was a lovely spot on the deck for me to get sun bathing. First stop was to Hill Inlet so
as we go to the viewing spot to see Whitehaven beach below us. It was so beautiful, exactly what a beach should look like, WHITE WHITE sand and the sea was so clear and blue, just perfect! The next stop they took us to the very northern end of Whitehaven, its 6km long so there was no one around us and then we had a yummy BBQ lunch, Martyn was in heaven! We got ages there and played in the water but wearing our 'Stinger Suits'. These were hilarious and are basically lycra suits you put on before going in the water because of the sheer amount of jellyfish that there is in the water. They are very dangerous so everyone has to wear these suits, so at least you dont look stupid on your own!!! After the beach we were taken to our snorkling spot, Martyn had been dying for it all day! It was right on the Reef and was really good, seen a whole lot of different fish, they were so colourful. We didnt get as close as when we were snorkling in Brazil but seen so much more, we had a an underwater camera but probably
Whitsundays
Lisa and Martyn wont get it developed till we get home so will be funny to see what kind of pictures we took! Had a great day especially as we got a cheese platter on the boat on the way back!
The next day we lay and baked by the lagoon and then started on the 'goon' (4 litre boxes of wine that cost around 5 pounds - Mum you would love them!!) We did our usual warm up of playing cards and drinking wine from mugs! Then we headed off down to Paddy Shenanigans to watch the game. We were sorrounded by Celtic fans but it did not stop the celebrations when Rangers scored.....if only they could of scored some more and won the game, bad score and I was getting far to into it as usual I dont know what Martyn has done to me! Had a great night though and even better when we found a pie shop on the way home!!
So we left Airlie Beach this morning, had a great time there def an OZ highlight so far. We are in Townsville now and are going over to Magnetic Island tomorrow for a few days before
Whitsundays
Lisa and Martyn hit Cairns.
Lots of Love xxxx
