We left Rainbow Beach, and motored on up the coast, arriving at a very laid back and thankfully rain-free little coastal hamlet with the bizarre name of 'Town of 1770', a bit north of Bundaberg.

Apparently, it was renamed in 1936 in honour of James Cook's landing there on 24th May 1770, on 'Bustard Beach' so named by Cook after he and his crew feasted on a Bustard caught there (Steve had a history lesson from the very enthusiastic campsite manager every time he went to the kiosk...)

This is the first 'real' stylie campsite we've had the good fortune to find. It's pretty basic, none of the bells and whistles of the Big 4 parks with the prices to match, but it's got that 'back to nature' feel about it - the sound of the sea lapping against the shore, kookaburras everywhere, and campfires allowed!

We had lush baked potatoes done on the fire, which Lich stoked and poked like a real bushman. And toasted marshmallows until we felt sick!

And this is where we met Kevin, a sound-alike of the Big Yin, and his lovely wee girlfriend Christine. They've just emigrated to Oz from Scotland and were having a look-see up the coast.

Basically, they couldn't take their eyes off our Wicked van and kept walking past it on the campsite, green with envy they were.

They begged us to swap with them, but who'd want to drive round looking like you're wearing a huge sombrero?! We've got our image to think of...

Good luck with your new lives in Oz guys!

WOW - this is just what we are looking for! Could you please tell me what the campsite is called and how we can find it as we will be visiting town of 1770 next weekend. Thanks Nicki
