Tree!
Love the root system. It was a busy week, so the weekend was fantastic, a good break. This week I handed in my art paper (hopefully she'll think it's all right!), handed in a philosophy paper (On Sunday afternoon, due this Wednesday; hopefully that's OK too!), and am a good way through my MARS paper that's due this Thursday. It's been a busy week of paper-ing, and I've got to get cranking more on studying for my genetics exam (which is this Saturday) and prepare for my trip to Heron (which leaves this Saturday as well). I'm also thinking about booking a trip during the three-day weekend that precedes my birthday (on the day of which I'll be making up a genetics lab for the time that Jon's coming... yaaaay makeup lab. >__<). These next two weeks are going to be quite busy!
This weekend, however, was quite enjoyable. On Thursday night (not technically the weekend, but close!), I hung out with Casey and she found some classic, 'corny' Aussie songs to play for me. It made me extremely happy (Hey Mom, Claire, Cheryl: remember "G'day, G'day, and how you goin'? Whada ya know, well strike a light..." from our International night in London?
Tree, Overall view
It's really quite large and impressive. Haha, I was amused. ^__^). Some of the music is quite good, and I enjoyed John Williamson a good deal. He's got some ones that make me happy: I spent a good deal of yesterday listening to "Give me a home among the Gum Trees," and smiling to myself.
Friday night I really did nothing; I tried to get some work done, but gave up... I ended up reading an entire 200 page novel that night (started at 9 PM, stayed up until 1 AM), and enjoyed myself completely. It's been a while since I've had a good pleasure book, and I liked the book so much I couldn't put it down. I'd forgotten how much I love to read a good book, and felt justified in staying up late to finish it.
I then got up early on Saturday morning to go on a walk (6:30 AM walk!). It's always nice to get up in the morning and get moving like that, provided you have friends to motivate you to get out of bed. The mornings here are really quite lovely, and we had a good walk. We almost got run over by a
hoard of bicyclists;
there were about 50 in a giant troupe that came screaming down the road! It was amusing to watch them all zoom by. After we got back from our walk and had eaten breakfast, Jon called me, then after he hung up, I took a 45 minute nap. (So much for being awake and productive in the morning). I then called home to wish Miles a happy birthday, and met up with Suzi to go to the Botanical Gardens to take photos. She figures we should send photos to the Flute Ensemble so they know we're here and doing well. I think some of them came out OK. Hopefully the ensemble will enjoy them! We then walked around the gardens, ate lunch (I had a kebab, mmmmm), went to South Bank where we didn't watch a movie (the times were inconvenient), and headed back to UQ. We took the Citycat in and out of the city; the river ferry is a quite scenic way to travel!
Back at IH, I tried to do some work, and then ended up over visiting Katy and Nell. We were going out to dinner that night with Katy's parents, who are visiting her,
so I ended up hanging out and visiting them for a while before we left. Nell, Trent, Katy, Sam and myself bussed into the city to meet Katy's parents at Queen Street Mall. We went to a Japanese restaurant, which was quite delicious and very busy. Katy's parents are lovely people! We all had a splendid time talking; her mom told me all about Heron Island (she and Katy's dad had just gotten back from a trip there). It sounds like there's tons of great snorkeling, the fish are plentiful and friendly, the birds are noisy and loud, and I think I'll have a fabulous time. ^___^ It'll be right up my alley.
After dinner, we went out to get some ice cream, which was also good. The 'kids' then ran off to catch the bus back to Uni, and Katy's parents were left to make their way back to their hotel. After a bus ride back (back seat pirates, Trent?), we were walking back to IH, and I was commenting on how I still had to see a possum (possums here are cuter than the ones in the states, and not rat-like). Nell grabbed my arm about 5
seconds after I'd said that, and lo and behold, there was a possum in the middle of the path! It just stood and watched us, then climbed up into a tree. We all madly took photos of it... They then all commented that my wish had come true, and that I should wish for something else. I promptly called for a flock of emus (which didn't appear); Trent said I should have asked for aliens, and Katy said I should have wished for a million dollars so I could travel anywhere around Oz. I though emus was a good answer... ^__^
Sunday was a quiet morning, in which I was finally able to get some work done. I handed in my philosophy essay, did laundry, worked on my MARS paper and studied genetics. It was torrential all day long, and I really just wanted a nap, or to curl up with a cup of tea and a good book. However, there were kookaburras calling all over the place, and I saw a mom with her three babies fly by my window. I think hearing and seeing kookaburras makes me more happy than perhaps it should, but they're so fantastic!
City Cat!
It's heaps of fun. ^__^ I love to hear them laugh--it's the coolest noise ever. It makes me more than a little happy, and reminds me that I really am in Australia. ^__^
After supper, Nell, Katy and I went on a walk around campus. There were some interesting birds, which I chased around the art museum lawn and were very reluctant to fly (although they did make very loud seagull-like noises; they defiantly weren't gulls because their legs were really long, they were brown, and had white spots on their wings). It was a good walk, and I then went back to my room, did more work and went to bed.
It was a good weekend, and I got lots of work done. I am glad to have philosophy and art done, but need to finish my MARS paper (I'm practically done writing, I just need to do lots of editing), and study like mad for my genetics exam this Saturday. I still can't believe the test is on Saturday... that was an annoying idea, but I suppose it makes sense b/c it can't conflict with anyone's class time table. Yargh.
