Gladys......
Greg riding his affectionately named bike "gladys"........ AFter our 16 hour fun bus journey we were back in Bangkok for the 3rd time! Yay! As we had been away from home for 5 weeks we decided to have "English Night" which obviously would consist of beer, football and curry. It soon became apparant we had chosen the wrong day as we had never seen Khao San so quiet and all the beer was locked away!! But the curry was awesome and we felt the right team won the cup.. We later found out that it was an election day and in Thailand that means you can't drink....woo to the hoo.
Being the seasoned travellers (hahaha) that we are we decided to arrange our own trip and transport to the River Kwai... After 4 hours on a wooden bench (proper thai train), we arrived. No longer trusting taxis we decided to find our own way to the hostel, to our suprise we actually found it with out backtracking or looking too suspicious, we were well proud of ourselves!
Our home for the next couple of nights was super chill, technically a tree house floating on the river kind of attached to the bank by a small bridge... Woke
Ethel......
Katy riding her affectionately named bike "ethel"........... up the next morning thankfully still attached, Greg indulged in a Big Boy for breakfast - this being the biggest and best breakfast we had ever had!!
In keeping with the try everything once rule we hired bikes....this time separate ones. Biking in the sunshine up to the River Kwai, we both realised we could have stepped (or peddled) straight out of the film "My Girl" so simaltaneously at the tops of our voices started to sing the theme tune. The locals loved it especially with Greg ringing his bell every two seconds......
Safely locking Ethel and Gladys away we ventured on to the bridge, we didn;t go up to the pass thing as it was 80kms away and we felt it was a bit extreme in one day, deciding instead to go to the war cemetary which held 6000 allied soldiers who lost their lives. Very somber but worth the visit to pay our respects.
Dropped Ethel and Gladys off..both in one piece we may add, we headed to the local night market.. Which turned out to be a proper quality Thai Market with proper Thai prices! So although we were now aware of how much we'd been done
sooooooo good..............
Could not believe how good the cake was....... over everywhere else, we took advantage of all the food which was awesome! Spotted a stall selling cakes and sweet treats (Gregs exact phrase) Greg pointed out the biggest chocolate cake which turned out to be the best he'd ever eaten. Katy not wanting to be left out spotted a doughnut stall, having to be held back, she settled for the biggest one there.....
Woke up gently swaying confused as neither of us had had a drink...thunder and lightening soon confirmed a storm..Yay. Good job we were leaving huh.
Back in Bangkok for the 4th and final time! We ventured on foot to China Town, a brisk hour and a half stroll - do not believe everything you read in Lonely Planet as it was a bit pony - a 5 min drive back and we were on the side of the street with our corn and Chang people watching.
Couldn't really get away with coming to Bangkok and not visiting the Grand Palace... so yet again on our own two feet we headed that way. Katy soon found herself walking alone and turned to see Greg paralised with fear surrounded by loads of pidgeons...Donning her shiny suit
River Kwai....
Er that'l be the bridge then...... of armour went back and got him, he then spent the duration cowering behind... Bird scare over and Greg relocating his testicals we were at the Palace.. We were both given additional (fetching) clothing to wear and headed to the most touristy place of our trip. Cant really put into words this place, well maybe ....'sparkly' 'very gold' and 'very very grand', fingers crossed the pictures will speak for themselves.
Thailand being rightly or wrongly known for the sex trade we couldn't go with out seeing the infamous Red Light District for ourselves. We arrived at Patpong (RLD) all seemed much of the same until we stumbled across a side street, Greg rarring to go had to be pulled back by his T-shirt when Katy noticed loads of man loving signs over head "Dream Boys" "Boys Bang Bangkok" "Bunnies Massage, For Men by Men".....Quick retreat we found another side street which was an actual cattle market except the girls numbers weren't branded on they were just badges... Walking past we noted two main sites, many a young Thai girl in teeny tiny bikinis with many a foreign dirtbag accompanied by his trusty bumbag..making Koh Samui look a bit tame.
Home Sweet Home.....
Our floating house................ Original plan was to have a drink but Katy just couldn't bring herself to do it.
As it was our last night in Thailand we got a bit reflective, neither of us believing we'd already had 6 weeks here! Truly glad we had come here wouldn't change a thing, had an amazing time every week being different. Both a little sad to be leaving....But hey roll on Austrailia, even if Greg is freaking out after finally doing some research!!
