I woke up this morning depressed. Wondering why Mark and I can't live in a place this beautiful all of the time. We finally made it out of Auckland. It took us two full days to shed our fear of driving. And not just because the kiwis drive on the other side of the road, but because they drive with shear determination, determined to get wherever it is they need to go as fast as they can, so they can relax.

Just a few hundred kilometers north of Auckland, we stumbled upon a ferry. Mark asked the attendent how long the journey was and she laughed, "Oh hon, it's only five minutes. We're nearly there." And just as she was done talking, the ten-car ferry door opened and it was like the flag was waved at the speedway. The cars took off and we were left sputtering up the hill in our two-cylinder Smart Car. Some guy named Wilson dropped it off at our hostel in Auckland, gave us the keys and left in a hurry.

But we somehow stumbled upon Russel, a small town of 8000 that has more boats docked in its safe coves than land structures. Just up the road, we discovered Pukeko Cottage, a modest backpacker hostel more like a homestay where we have our own room with french doors overlooking the deep emerald bays. The sign posted above our bed requests that you turn off the sink when you brush and compost your excess food. You see, the cottage runs off of the yearly collected rainfall.

Our days consist of following the locals. Sometimes we watch them disappear into forest, and we follow them. Sometimes we find ourselves on private land, but most of the time we find ourselves on a secluded beach with white sand. But we won't bore you with the details. Just know, we are surviving, one day at a time.

If I ever doubted your writing skills (which I never have) you have now reminded me of what an amazing writer you are. My jealousy is overwhelming at the sights and experiences you guys are going through. I am happy to know that you two are having a good time and hopefully relaxing around all of the uptight locals. Thank for the update. I miss you Leighannie!
