I was in Kagawa for two weeks before I was able to do any sightseeing. First thing I did was head for the castle I had seen in the background everyday for the past two weeks. I caught the tale end of a Sunday vegetable market near the castle. Vendors lined the street seeing flowers, plants and veggies from their farms. They were set up in front of a small park that has a few beautiful bronze statues. On the other side of the park was the castle. It is small compared to most castles I’ve seen in Japan, but it has pretty grounds and is well maintained. I am told that at the end of March the cherry blossoms bloom at the castle and the light them up at night. Inside the castle grounds there is a shop where they make traditional Japanese fans the old fashioned way. One man was carving toys by hand. It was really fascinating. I bought a fan from them and stuck it on my wall at home. After the shop I headed up the steep slope to the castle. Halfway up I noticed something in the air. At first I thought it was dust, but then I realized it was snow. The snow became heavier the higher I climbed and by the time I reached the court yard there was a good amount of snow falling. The snow was short lived. It didn’t stick to the ground and the flakes fell from the sky for only about 15 minutes. I enjoyed my excursion and I am looking forward to visiting there again when the cherry blossoms bloom.
