Longest Left in the World!Longest Left in the World!Longest Left in the World!

Chicama is the most famous surf break in Peru because it is the longest "left" in the world. When it is just right, people can ride the wave for more than 2 minutes.
(Singing) "Don't you want me baby......don't you want me ahhhh...ohhh!" Here is another update from the land of 80's one hit wonders and incredible surfing lefts! With about three 80's stations in Lima, it is not uncommon to hop into a cab and hear your favorite song from 25 years ago (if the radio has not been robbed yet).

Well, there is just under 3 months left here in Peru and things are still going well. Melanie has been very busy lately meeting deadlines for her projects and I have been sticking to my goal of attending Spanish classes. Melanie was recently in Atlanta presenting her findings at a conference. I hope you enjoy this collection of photos with most of them coming from a recent 5 day surfing trip about 10 hours north up the coast of Peru. We had six people part of a two car caravan (Team Tucson and Team Subaru) that included Melanie, my cousin Dan, myself, and our friends Dave, Bailey, and Brian.

The trip was in a bit of a holding pattern because agricultural strikes caused several blockades along the Panamericana Norte. We heard that some people were stuck on the highway for

two days. After the strikes were over, we headed out into the great Peruvian coastal desert which basically extents the whole coast of Peru. With traffic in Lima, it took about 10 hours to get to relaxing beach town of Huanchaco which is located just west of Trujillo.

After surfing there for three days and checking out the ruins of Chan Chan, we continued two hours north to another beautiful beach town of Pacasmayo. The waves were great but the current was strong pushing you towards one of the longest piers in Peru.

We were about to head back to Lima but we heard that the home of the "LONGEST LEFT IN THE WORLD" was breaking.......Chicama (said with a soft whisper). Chicama is a place, that with the right swell (about 10 times a year), one can ride a wave about 3-6 feet high for over two minutes!!! With my rides on waves averaging 1-5 seconds, that would be incredible. When we first saw the ocean at Chicama, we just saw lines of left handed waves (see first photo of this blog). Well, we were not able to get waves in the 2 minute range but were were

able to ride waves for about one minute or a little over. It was pretty unbelievable! I could not help but count as I was riding the waves......one one thousand, two one thousand, three......!

I hope everyone is well! We will be home soon!

Suh-weet!
Hi guys. I was just asking around to see if anyone had news of you. I'd hate to think you'd gone entirely native and weren't coming back. Those waves are something. They look perfectly regular, one after the other. We miss you and are looking forward to having you back around. Great pictures! Man, you guys look tough.

NO WAY!
Dude, those waves look awesome! I am sooooo jealous. Surfing will never be the same after that kind of session. I'm shocked...
2nd April 2008

Nice.
Don't know if I was more impressed with the surf or the facial hair. Looks like a great time! Thanks for the update. Take care!
