MrC with Ancestors.
William and Elizabeth's Resting Place - Liverpool Cemetery. Hi All!
We both slept pretty well until Charlie nudged me at 6.30 am saying “fix your c-pap machine”…. I said no I think it’s the alarm clock radio on your side….turns out it was a hairdryer next door….and so started our full day in Sydney.
Made arrangements with SheLion to meet with her, she was gracious enough to rearrange her day for us as she thought we were here for a week or so and I didn’t know she thought that as we are in Sydney only two days… Thank you Sheline, you are as always a wonderful lady!
We had fun riding the train system here in Sydney, its amazing… we only missed one train because it was going back the same way we came into the station and didn’t realise that the “Glenfield” station is what you call a switchback station… another words its where you change lines and they come in and out the same way.
Well no harm done another one comes along in 20 minutes…. LOL I think there is as saying someowhere in there...sat and enjoyed the outer country side while we waited.
We rode the trains from Wolli
St Lukes
MrC in front of the Church his 6th Great Grandfather helped design. Creek Station to Liverpool Station… thought of Mark and Julia as it sounds like England! Got a lovely photograph of the old Station which I will put up when I get a net link! *stamps foot*
Sheline picked us up at the Station and took us driving around Liverpool, took us to where the Nathanial Lucas Grave was at St Lukes Church of England, from there we set off on a wild goose chase looking for the place where Nathaniel was buried I had seen a tomb stone in one of the family histories I have at home. Rounded I said.....LOL it was square when we finally found it.
We went to the Liverpool Cemetery, and took photos of Charlie with William Nathanial and Elizabeth Anne Lucas’ graves, so we now have their details.
Around we went again to the Pioneers Cemetery, a nice walk in the park, they actually have moved the graves from St Lukes to the Pioneer Cemetery …. No luck…. Sheline suggested the library.. interesting things that you find at the Library meet a lovely lady called Julie in the history department.
She handed me a HUGE file on Nathaniel Lucas, alas I
St Luke's Sign
Sign just inside the side gate. didn’t have time to get it copied as Shelines time was limited today, but got Julie's email address so will email her later for documents from it.
Anyway Julie even made a phone call for us to make sure ithe stone was still where she knew it to be, you guessed it, the tomb stone is the only one left at St Lukes and is leaning up against the north wall…. Just where we found it, we took more photos of the church and with Charlie hand resting on his 6 greats grandfather's tomb stone, an emotional moment for him. Seems he is liking all the fuss I am making DB and Rick as you knew he would be!
Here’s the story of the Church and the Stone, Nathaniel Lucas and the Architect John Greenway, designed and built the St Lukes Church, Julie (the Librarian) reported a funny story she heard…
She believes that Nathaniel Lucas was murdered by John Greenway after they had an argument when John found Nathaniel drunk on the job. A very bitter argument followed and a few days later Nathaniel was found drowned in the river. He was only 54, who knows
St Lukes Church of England
You can just see Nathaniels Grave Stone just to the right corner of the building wall. what would have happened if he had lived longer. Maybe John didn’t murder him so much as push him in the river from to sobber him up, while Nathaniel in a drunken state could not rescue himself…who knows… its times like this you want to go back and ask!
Anyway after a lovely lunch with Sheline, Charlie and I both had Chinese again.. heehee, Sheline had to leave us, so we did some shopping, took the long way back to the train station and came home with no trouble making our connection at Glenfield again.
Had a quiet night in and yes Charlie had the Grilled Salmon and Lemon Sauce.
