From Chaing Mai we had a crazy busride to Pai, a small ecletic town in Northern Thailand. The roads were so curvy and the van driver constantly passed trucks around blind corners. Noone in our vehicle vomited but we've heard some horror stories. The first few nights we stayed in some lakeside bungalows and met travellers that had been in town for several months. The first night the town was dead by 8pm. Only in the next few days did we learn that there is a trick to Pai nightlife. Everyone goes to specific bars and ends up at the Bamboo Bar. We ran into folks we met in Bangkok, Chaing Mai and on bus rides. Then the rains came and everyone hid for a few days. We took refuge at Phu Pai Art resort and never wanted to leave. Once we got back to Pai the town was filling up for the 3rd annual Reggae Festival to combat Global Warming. The sleepy hippi town was packed with farangs from all over the world. We spent some awsome days lazing by the pool at the Unicorn with our fellow travellers. Renting a motorbike we were able to visit several waterfalls, see some amazing landscapes and visit a canyon. Pai was a fun town to party and lose yourself. Eventually we had to make ourselves leave and got on a hellish bus ride to Chaing Rai.

It's a small world
It is surprising, yet not--that you meet up with fellow travelers on down the road. I recall running in to people at a youth hostel in Quito that I had met in Colombia. It's a phenomenon of reading the same or similar travel recommendations.
