Still catching up, last month Israel & I visited Kaikoura so he could go on the Albatross Encounter boat for like, the ten millionth time. This time I joined him as I managed to arrange a free trip. Working in tourism has benefits. I really enjoyed the boat trip. For those wanting to see albatross, I think this would be a lot better than on the peninsula at Dunedin. You're a lot closer for one and you get to see them fighting. The boat tows a chunk of frozen fish leftovers so all the birdies follow desperately trying to get a bite or two. Because I am not a pussy, and my stomach can tolerate a little boat ride, I took tons of awesome photos on Israel's fancy long lens camera.

We were handed out biscuits & hot chocolate on the ride back to shore. The girl was obviously used to tourists not appreciating the finer points of NZ baking, because she made sure to warn the punters that the gingernuts were hard as she distributed them. Still, they seemed very surprised at just how hard gingernuts are to foreign palates. One German tried to bite it and failed; he removed it from his mouth and eyed it suspiciously, presumably thinking it was some sort of nautical prank to hand out inedible ginger-flavoured hard-tack. He gave it a second try and on the third managed to break some off and swallow it. The English simply resorted to gnawing on it like ferrets.

And that's all we did while there pretty much. Oh, We stopped in Gore Bay on the way home so I could see the old concrete slide. I remember doing a really interesting walk a few times there as a child, through a canyon but I don't think it's accessible anymore.

ah I see your pedagogical attention to the minutiae of avian nomenclature has once again rendered the ornithological literature moot. I look forwards with eager anticipation to your next installment.

Yuck, I'm not eating one of those!
Haha I love your blog, Robyn, it always makes me laugh! LOL @ the German who took the gingernut out of his mouth and looked at it. In the words of Frau Jones: schnell, schnell, schnell..
