Me & My ManMe & My ManMe & My Man

And he DOES fit in my suitcase!
Ok, so he’s only 7 months, but he’s really very mature for his age. This young man is full of positive energy, he’s attentive, an exceptionally good listener, loves long walks in the park and lots of cuddle time. And perhaps this is inappropriate, but I have also seen him naked. Why, Harrison… he’s the perfect boyfriend!

Harrison John Clark was born to good friends Rachael and Jason and I’m happy to hang with the little man during my holiday (also known as Sausage, Woobily Woo, Bubby, Little Man, H-man, Harrison the Marrison, and when applicable, Little Monster).

For me, I’ve been fascinated and completely impressed in the manner in which Rachael (and Jason!) raise this little munchkin. They make conscious efforts to avoid the over stimulation that can so easily occur in today’s society…from overly processed, sweetened and preserved foods to the constant sensory overload of TVs, video games, too many “toys” and all the other bells and whistles that in my opinion can be too much for an adult brain, let alone a child’s. Maybe that’s why kids usually end up playing with the simple cardboard box that a toy came in, instead of the toy.

NO, not really Michael Jackson that would be weird. It's the Michael Jackson Beat It CD, the soundtrack for Harrison's bath time.

But because I love working with kids and want to better understand their behavior (especially the many abused children I’ve come in contact) I’ve already done a good handful of reading and research in years past on childhood psychology. But now I’ve been reading up on the brain development of a child in the first 3 years of life, which is equally, if not, more intriguing to me.

The statistics and research done on the obvious importance of a loving, stable environment, questioning what is the best healthy balance between loving attention and letting go to allow independence. Learning the many incredible benefits of talking, reading and singing to a child. The speaking disabilities that can result from the overuse of pacifiers, remembering that very few and simple “toys” encourage creative thinking. ---CHILDHOOD FLASHBACK: I remember spending all day cutting out vegetables from construction paper to make a homemade vegetable soup for mom, gosh those corn kernels were time consuming.--- And speaking of soup, the importance of good nutrition, beginning with breast feeding, which directly effects energy, immune system, brain function, growth and development. The list goes on and on, and I’ll stop there so I don’t begin to sound like an article for Parenting Magazine….but I’ll end with the last thing I read tonight, which I think can apply to everyone - parent or not:

“Relationships with children give us a special opportunity to improve ourselves, to acquire a larger awareness of reality. In this way our limits are stretched, as is our ability to participate in life.” - Understanding the Human Being. Silvana Quattrocchi Montanaro, M.D.

This travel blog is dedicated to Rachael, Jason and Harrison…because often, the most incredible things to experience in the world are the people right in front of you.
