We actually shopped IN shops more than at the stalls.
Wednesday, Feb 13

Today, we went shopping at Santa Cruz, a part of Mumbai that Yvette (a friend who's from here) recommended.

There was some trouble in the city last night, related to the MNS chief Raj Thackeray who seems to incite people to riot against citizens who have come from the North to work here in Mumbai. It's been going on for some while and people are leaving to return to their original home. Most of them are taxi drivers, some shop keepers. It settled down by morning and then started up again a bit this evening--after Thackeray was arrested and released (so his supporters had something to be concerned about).

We shopped till we dropped, ate a veggie panini type sandwich, and shopped some more. After a rest at the hotel, we went and changed some traveler's checks. Drove around, saw a bronze statue artisan's workshop, some other caves that no one's looking after and that construction will soon wreck.

We then went to Powai, another section of Mumbai. drove around the Lake and toured the campus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. After getting another view of this huge city from a hilltop

a very good but very BIG sandwich!
in Powai, we went to our friend's flat for another wonderful dinner.

Have to pack up tomorrow and will head back to Kolkata. We're probably not going to have internet access tomorrow so will try and catch up on Friday. Happy Valentine's Day!!
