Here we are at Sun Yat Zen Childhood home Park.
Since our last entry, we have been busy.

On Oct 16, we visited Frank Yu in Shekou, Shenzhen, China. We also posted a photo album of our visit. For those are interested in Frank, but did not receive the link to the album, please send us an email.

On Oct 19, we went to Zhong Shan (Chung Shan, Shek Kee), China with Mui Jer. We visited Mui Jer's sister Ah Ling. From Hong Kong, we took a bus to Chung Shan. The bus first drove us to the HK border. We completed the immigration business at the Hong Kong side, board the same bus, enter China immigration, and we board the same bus which took us to Chung Shan. At Chung Shan, we took a taxi to Ah Ling's place. The whole trip cost HK$90 each + RMB$16 taxi and took about 3 hours.

Ah Ling, who used to live in pretty tough conditions in the 1960-80, is now pretty well to do. Her two sons own pretty good businesses. The younger son live in a luxury apartment, where we stayed. The apartment is two-storied, and is about 3000 square foot. The design of the development is like

Here we are at Ah Ling's two-storied apartment, overlooking a swimming pool. So it is very much like a Caribbean resort.
a Caribbean resort, with palm trees, ponds, swimming pool, restaurant. The only thing missing is the latino music. There is also a little garden within each unit, they call it "garden in the sky".

We were particularly impressed with the dim sum at the restaurant inside the "resort". The different dumplings were all so good. We would say that is the best dim sum we ever had.

Chung Shan is no longer the little town that we visited in 1990. It has grown to be an impressive city. It is proud of its reputation of being a "clean city". We did not see any spitting or throwing of garbage.

On Oct 20, we visited the childhood home of Sun Yat Zen, Father of China. His home is in Chui Hung village, in Chung Shan. There is also a museum that describes his life events.
Inside the museum, there is an area that shows the set up of older homes. They also show the type of food eaten at different festivals. We were impressed with the display and spent a few hours there.

Oc Oct 21, we left our hospitable hosts and took a bus to Kung

Buck (1.5 hour, RMB$15) then crossed the border to Macau. At the border, they built a big underground shopping area, which is quite interesting. In Macau, we walked about 2 KM and visited phyllis's mother's cousin Lee Hon Wan. He is 75 and lives with his youngest son Ah Wah.

In Macau, there are a few new casino and one of them is called "Sands", which is gold in colour and can be seen from quite a distance.

Macau has a population of about half a million, and not like Hong Kong, which has about 7 million. The pace is less hectic and the air is slightly (just slightly) better. We went to a park (Pine Mountain - Chung Shan) and took a tram to the top. The visit is nice and we were able to view Macau from its peak.

After visiting the park, we walked to the Macau Pier and took the ferry home to Hong Kong. The ferry costs HK$175 (Ouch !, about US$23 and took one hour).

In other times when we were not in China or Macau, we visited Shing Mun reservoir and Lamma Island and did two short hikes. We also did a lot of shopping, especially in "Jusco $10 store" where there are a lot of gadgets and japanese-type souvenirs and merchandise. We also frequented "Ap Liu Street" where there are also a lot of gadgets, like flashlights, etc.

One of the things that we noticed in the last few days in Hong Kong is that the toilets are generally cleaner (than years ago). Many establishments even provide toilet paper.

US$1 = HK$7.75 = RMB$8.06

Macau
I totally agreed...it is so costly to HK <-> Macau. Imagine you go with a whole family and they charge more on the weekend, too. it is supposed to have lots of good food...cost of ferry tkt stops us from going there...
