Atlanta
In case you're in Atlanta and can't find room 350, it's right there. Wow. It’s been a while since I wrote.
Since Nashville, we have been to Atlanta, GA, and back up to Henderson, KY where we are now. Atlanta was great, mostly. A little stickiness at the venue, but the show came together fine. I ran the in all by myself, and it when fairly ok. It felt like it took forever, and when I asked Ryan about it, he said that I’m doing fine, just the crew is slowing us down, and since our crew is different at every venue… And for the out, Rachel, the MC, got sick, so I was officially in charge. That was great fun; and honestly, not much different than usual. Ryan also left us in that wonderful city.
Yesterday, we drove from Atlanta to Henderson, which included driving back through Nashville, so what should have been a 3-state day (GA, TN, KY) turned into a 4-state day when we took a wrong turn to get pizza. We got here fairly early, so we came and scoped out the venue, which was a great help. This was only Kyle, Sarah (ASM), Jessica (SD) and I because everyone else, Anne (SM), Beth (ASM) and Rachel (MC) were all death warmed over. After that, we ordered pizza to eat while watching the Superbowl. To get the pizza, we ended up in Indiana. Long story and quite the adventure.
Kentucky is exactly how I pictured it. And really really flat. Like really flat. No hills even.
I got to ride in the truck the whole way here because Kyle and I are the only two who are not sick. We decided we are like Will Smith’s character in I Am Legend. It was fun. We had a nice chat and lots of laughs, including large parties when we entered new states. The funny thing is that he learned to drive in the UK, so he always keeps both hands on the wheel and looks at the road, never at me when we’re talking. For those of you who have ever sat in my back seat while I was driving, you know that that’s not so much the case with my driving 😉
We watched the last bit of the game, which was fantastic. Kyle has never seen it, so we wanted him to watch it. But he had children in his room with him so could only come over for a few minutes. Then everyone to bed!
Today’s in in Henderson went really fast. The walk-thru last night was a huge help. Today, everything of mine got set up in over an hour less time. It took an hour less. Something like that. But then a lot of stuff was patched incorrectly and they have a board that is not on our rider (and is as old as me), so it took me a bit to get it all patched correctly. Or at least enough to teach their board op how to do it. All in all, it was one of our best shows.
At lunch today, we got to eat with the kids. I got my plate and Suzan asked if she could go get me a chair so I could sit with her. I sat with Suzan, Travisan, Joan, Elijah, Martie and a few others. It was so fun! I asked Elijah his name and apologized for not knowing them all and one of them said, “it is because you do not have a lot of time to spend with us.” And oh, how I wish I did. Then they started quizzing me on math problems, as I did with them, and they were pretty impressed I knew what 1 trillion minus 15 was. Martie had me doing algebra in my head. After lunch, I put my camp skills to use and played “the cup game” with some of them. I’m still pretty fast, for an old white woman. Some of them asked me to show them how to play.
It was a blast. I don’t get to spend a lot of time with them, but each time is richer (especially since they are figuring out who I am as well.) In a week or so, we have a week off and I’ll get to spend lots of time playing with them.
So, a new habit since I’ve been on tour. Apparently I am a total morning person now. I am totally chipper and bouncing off the walls until we start focus (which is the most boring part of my day). Craig thinks I’m slipping in happy pills. I think Sarah nailed it though. She said, “maybe it’s because you get to do what you love first thing in the morning.” It took me back a few years. When the tech world was very new and touring wasn’t even in my thoughts, I asked Dale if I had what it takes to make it in this business. He answered it in a round about way and ended the email with a statement I have never forgotten. “The question is do you want to do it. If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” And that’s it! I love what I do! And I am so blessed to have that.
Tomorrow we head to Charlotte, NC. Woot. Driving all the way across Kentucky!

Jami that was what surprised me the most when I drove across Kentucky with my friends when they moved to Colorado was how flat it was. If you can get up high anywhere all you will see is tree tops. I am so glad you are loving what you do. There is nothing better, I guess that is why I had 6 kids. I loved being a mom and a gramma. So stick a couple of those kids in your pocket and bring them home, The ,more the merrier. I love you
