FIRST STOP…Buenos Aires, Argentina. Culture shock! For someone who has not been out of the Estados Unidos (with the exception of some famous tourist destinations) I’m a little overwhelmed to say the least. I now know what it’s like for others to come to America and not speak the language. It's midnight and I am sitting in a little café called
Valerio. When you sit down they bring you cheese and onion pizza and some empanadas. I’m drinking a muy pequena margarita and a salad. I say salad and use the term loosely as there isn’t a bit of lettuce in it, just a big bowl of shredded carrots! But very good, except for the hearts of palm…muy malo! No me gusta hearts of palm!
I’ve had a full week of Espanol classes and have barely touched the surface. I’ve decided to stay here 2 weeks longer to get a better handle on the language. This should make my trip a little easier…I hope.
I visited the Cementerio de la Recoleta here in BA. It’s famous and absolutely beautiful! Crazy to think you’d spend hours walking around the cemetery looking at graves but they were so beautiful you forgot that it was a cemetery. If you ever make it to BA be sure to check it out.
I’ve had 2 tango lessons and I'm ready to go pro. I must have scared off the first instructor though because he didn’t show for my second lesson! It worked well for me because I got to work with the studio owner, Maria. She has been dancing for 40 years with her husband. They have won many awards and danced with Luciano Pavarotti, Robert Duvall, Bill Clinton, Liza Minelli and Julio Iglesias. She kept saying to me
ok, secret and then she’d give me a dancing tip! Probably not really a ‘secret’ but it sure made me feel special. Muy bueno. Tres mas lecciones proximo semana…look out!
My first heart breaking experience…while walking to a bar I watched people line up to pick through the McDonalds’ trash. Literally, a very polite line waiting their turn to pick through the bags of trash. Very heart breaking. Remember those in other countries are starving.
A very curious experience…I asked an instructor where to go to dance to local music and she said we don’t dance to that here, we like America 80’s and 90’s music
. I almost fell on the floor. I’m hours from home and still listening to music from home! Literally, Gloria, Feel like a Woman, Flashdance, Funky Town. They love it and know all the words! Crazy!
The weather is as beautiful as the people...stay tuned.
