Sunrise on the PromenadeSunrise on the PromenadeSunrise on the Promenade

A 8am walk south along the Rhein Promenade will see a sunrise above the mountains of the Rhein Valley.
My first two days in Europe. To put it in a word... cold. A couple more words though would see it being not too cold. Bonn luckily has been soft on me and a great way to introduce me to Europe. I'm staying with the Vogt-Schmickler's, my sisters first host family from her German exchange way back when. They have been the perfect home away from home and they can cook great which means I've had lots of good food. Can't get use to it though because starting tomorrow I'm in the youth hostels where I'm going to have to fend for myself... not sure what I will do about the food thing yet. I'm sure it'll come to me.

While there hasn't been lots of things to do and see as a tourist in Bonn, what I have done and seen has definately been worth the stop. After sleeping in till the tasteful hour of 10 I found I had to figure out breakfast for myself followed by guessing the right bus to get me into town. Got to see the house (and room) in which Ludwig Van Beethoven was born, and while many of you may dislike or

rather not care about classical music, if you know me well enough you will know it's one of those little joys I have when I'm on my own, surrounding myself in music from the likes of Beethoven, Mozart, Pachbelles and Bach. So to me that was bliss along with a whole museum dedicated to him and an modern audio visual show. A post card here, an e-card there then I'm off wandering the rest of Bonn and all there is too do for free for a penniless studen traveller. Expert guidance and a fun filled afternoon with Ingrid and a museum in the evening with Imtraust and my first day of Europe saw me collapsing onto my bed at night happy but exhausted.

This morning was a different. An early rise while still dark and I got a lift into town in the morning where I went for a cold morning walk down the promenade along the Rhein towards the sunrise. Very heart warming and a spectacular sight to see. A 2 hour self guided tour around the Egyptian museum before heading off to Köln where I had my first experience in a Bierhaus and my first german beer,

with a serve of fries on the side of course. A walk around the old town and a visit to the cathedral where I climed all 509 stairs to the 157m tall tower (with freezing gale winds of course) to have a gander over all of Köln. A worthy climb indeed. Another trip back to the old town where I found a nice little corner pub, went in an ordered a good half litre of beer and chatted and talked with the barman where i learnt a detailed history of old Köln with its cobblestone streets and market. It was enough for me, getting late, getting cold, getting tired again, I took the train back to Bonn only to have it cancelled half way there. Of course I didn't know it was cancelled because I didn't quite understand a single word that was said over the speakers but tentatively I followed the crowd off the train and along some crazy walk through the park where I found myself at a tram station. Tram. Bus. Home. Another great dinner. Now here and now ready for bed.

Up bright and early tomorrow to catch my train to Berlin, so till then.

Cyas.

The Cathedral in Köln is as grand as it is big. Great gothic design with walls made of stain glass.

Ailie, you're not the only one who feels a bit nostalgic looking at those great photos. At least Rob was of legal age when he visited the Bierhaus - unlike a certain girl traveller in the USA recently. Rob, looking forward to your Berlin and Prague pics.
