To start with, yes it's Friday night, we're still at the Lake and we're still bored in the evening. It's still autumn, and I have to advertise some temperatures that even Armidale will have trouble beating (one for the Canberra boys). These are temps from 9AM the last few days; Monday -19C, Tuesday -21C, Wednesday -23C and finally for the best of all Thursday -24C. No matter how good the heating is supposed to be, its having a bit of trouble at times. Today was remarkably warm... around the -15C mark!!
Alcohol seems to be the activity of choice for the vast majority of the "Chucktown" residents - there's nothing else to do. One definite advantage is the possibility (and likelihood) each evening of convincing people to do and say some rather stupid things. For example, a couple of nights ago some of our drunken housemates decided to do some jumps off the hill towards the road on a kids snowboard (about a 1m drop) which turned up in our unit from a guy down the road (though no one will touch the boards without gloves for fears of fingerprints - yep that kind of source). It was going well
Rundle Lodge
The view you get from the Bar at the Banff Springs with several fantastic stacks until the fire alarm went off for the whole lodge and 200+ people had to wait in the cold at midnight (yep the temp was about -20C). That basically killed off all festivities for the night but also kicked off the speculation of who would be evicted due to setting the alarm off... The mystery continues (who knew our lives would be reduced to this?)
The world cup downhill and Super G is on this weekend for the men so the town has been flooded with 100+ 6 foot plus European guys. Ladies, they are all as hot as you imagine (and just as arrogant!) - however, the French ones are offering to autograph anything, anywhere, anytime. Strangely enough there are no Aussies competing, so any degree of patriotism we may have felt has disappeared, along with the tips of our fingers due to the frostbite 😊
Work wise Liz has just been promoted (a massive $1.72 per hour pay rise). I myself find that due to one of my workmates resigning (when I say resigning I mean stealing a work vehicle, loading it up and travelling to a neighbouring town in the middle
of the night) I almost had to put in a couple of full days works and had to cut down on my daily poker game to only an hour. But the hard work is finished with a replacement being found and apparently extra people starting next week. So I will have about 6 hours a day to dedicate to improving my poker game.
The last of our housemates arrived two days ago. A fellow from Germany named Steve (slightly disappointing name, we were hoping for a bit more of a teutonic name). So in the den there is now 2 from Brissie, 1 from Adelaide, 2 from Quebec, 1 from Ontario and finally one from Germany. But to Lizzy's continual dismay she is still the only female/non-smelly human.
On Wednesday we managed to snare a day off together and decided to have a crack at snowboarding. We managed to get ourselves on the snowboarding 101 lesson in the morning after unsuccessfully going down the smallest beginner slope with no clue what we were doing. Our rationale for taking up snowboarding is twofold... 1 we've never done it before and get to learn for free, and 2, buying snowboarding

What we get to look at every morning when we wake up. Yes, the heating works well! gear is about one third of the price of ski gear. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves but not without some harm. Lizzy has a collection of bruises that have to be seen to be believed (who knew you could bruise so badly that each individual vein looks like dinner for a vampire). Most of the bruises were related to an incident with the T-bar.... Lizzy lost 😞 Everything else aside, it was heaps of fun, and we will definitely keep with it - might stick to chairlifts though.
We tripped to Banff a few times and as evidenced by the photos from the Fairmont Banff Springs. There are loads of Fairmont hotels around Canada, and they all look completely out of place in the environment, but are spectacular just the same. At the one in Banff we ordered tea and a piece of chocolate cake to share (that's all we could afford). The view was amazing, and we got to feel like millionaires. Is definitely worth a return trip. We also went to Banff on Monday night to buy groceries, and just because nothing can be without adventure, the bus back to the Lake nearly drove off without us -
Chateau Lake Louise
View of the Chateau from the lookout above the lake I suppose it is only a 50km walk back.
Lizzy walked (well, illegally jumped in one of the work trucks which was supposed to be headed in the other direction) up to the Lake yesterday for her Thursday afternoon ritual of tea by the Lake in the Fairmont Chateau. It was completely different to last time - this time the Lake had frozen over, and there were people playing ice hockey. There were signs saying 'Danger, Thin Ice', no not sure quite how that situation was going to end. Will attach photos of the Lake next time.
That's probably it for this time, but we would love to hear from all of you. If you don't want to attach a message to the blog, send us an email at either:

Just to rub it in, we have had a couple of storms the last 2 nights and it is now a pleasant 25 PLUS. The nsw/vic ferrials have had their 1st night, 2 rooms are already on 2 breaches 3 and your gone. should be a pretty quiet building by the end of the week if they keep going at this rate. 7 went last week. 23 was last years record, so I should have no trouble betting last years record
