PenguinPenguinPenguin

This penguin has some attitude
***This entry is somewhat belated but we ( ok to be honest it is my turn so I can´t blame this on Jordan....I) have been slacking in the updates. So this is a quick summary of the rest of our time in Patagonia!**

After seeing the glacier at El Calafate we decided to go up to Buenos Aires along the Atlantic coast of Argentina. This is a pretty ridiculously long trip so we broke it up into two segments. The first segment was maybe, no, it was the worst bus ride of our trip. In an effort to be cheap we took a bus that wasn´t designed for overnight trips, so our seats had maybe 5cm or so of recline capacity...lesson learned. Semi-cama beds on 20 hour bus rides are our friends. Also, there was a situation with Jordan being squished in beside a salami eating, loud breathing though his nose, chatty yet indecipherable type. Not pretty. However, the painful journey turned out really well in the end because we had the opportunity to stop in Puerto Madryn and take a tour of the penninsula near there to see penguins, elephant seals and southern wright (spelling?) whales.

The tour

What part of the whale is this?
was amazing as we got to get very, very close to the penguins who were totally relaxed even though there were a ton of tourists five feet away from them. This makes me think they must be used to the attention. The elephant seals were less impressive, mostly because we couldn´t get very close to them and they were pretty much just chilling on the beach. Ie. looking like maybe they were dead. However, the whale watching was really, really cool. The bay off the pennisula is an area where the whales come to to give birth and so we saw tons of mother whales and calves. They came right up beside and under the boat. It was so exciting because they are HUGE.

After the tour we busted a move to the bus station and caught an overnight bus to Buenos Aires. Seriously, the semi-cama beds have never felt so good. Wow. Buenos Aires was so frickin cool but that will be our next entry....hopefully sooner rather than later! Hope you are all well

This one I know--the tail!

4th December 2007

Must be humbling to have such a massive creature swim past you. Having an 18-wheeler go by is one thing but a living, breathing animal... beats the whale-watching stories I've heard where you only see a glimpse of a tail half way between you and the horizon. Keep the stories comin'!
